Experiments and

demonstrations
Unit 4. MatterYear 6
Separation by magnetism.
A mixture of bread crumbs and iron fillings.
Can I use my fingers to separate this?
The substances are the same size.
Iron fillings are magnetic.
Bread crumbs is not.
I can use a magnet to separate this mixture
quickly.
When I take the magnet out the iron fillings are
sticking into the magnet leaving the bread
crumbs behind.
Separation by EVAPORATION
A solution in which one of the substances
dissolves into another
Hot water and salt
Create a solution by dissolving some salt
into the warm water and stir the 2
substances.
Ones the water evaporates, it leaves the
salt behind.
The salt is left in the jar.
Sedimentation and Decantation
Muddy water.
A beaker or jar.
After some time mud settles down at the
bottom (sedimentation)
Separate the water by pouring it gently
into another beaker/container. Separating
a liquid from a solid (decantation)
Chemical reactions. FERMENTATION.

Sugar 2. One packet of yeast per
Yeast bottle
Balloons 3. No sugar in bottle 1, 1
Hot water teaspoon in bottle 2 and 3

Three bottles 4. Cap each bottle and shake
A teaspoon them
A funnel 5. Remove the caps and stretch
the mouth of a balloon over
the mouth of each bottle
6. Let the bottles sit for several
hours

Each layer is less dense than the one below
it.
