Unit 5 A

Moving house
Different use of adjectives:

We use adjectives when we want to give information about someone,

something or somewhere.
We can use them to make comparissons in different levels:

Comparative Sentences: When we compare 2 things at the same time.

Superlatives Sentences: When only 1 is the best in a specific category.
Balance: When we want to express that 2 things are in the same level.
Comparative Sentences: classify adjectives according to
the number of syllables.
Adjectives:

Short Long
(1 or 2 syllables ended with Y) (2 or more)

big happy crowded clever

small noisy, etc. Beautiful expensive, etc.
To make the comparative form of these adjectives we have to:
Adjective + er more + adjective
Bigger / happier / smaller / noisier, etc. More crowded, more beautiful, etc.

Antofagasta is more expensive than Santiago.

You are happier now than the year before.
Tips:
When we compare 2 things, we have to add the word than.

The opposite of more is less. This word usually goes with long adjectives.
Example: A car is less dangerous than a motorcycle.

If we want to emphasize the comparisson we have different expressions:

1. To show big difference: much / far / a lot. (Before the comparative adjective)
Example: She is a lot/much/far more beautiful than the other girl.

1. To show small difference: slightly / a little / a bit. (Before the comparative adjective)
Example: Calama is slightly/a little/a bit cheaper than Antofagasta.
Superlative Sentences: classify adjectives according to
the number of syllables.
Adjectives:

Short Long
(1 or 2 syllables ended with Y) (2 or more)

big happy crowded clever

small noisy, etc. Beautiful expensive, etc.
To make the superlative form of these adjectives we have to:
Adjective + est most + adjective
biggest / happiest / smallest / noisiest, etc. most crowded, most beautiful, etc.

Antofagasta is the most expensive city in Chile.

Im living the happiest moment in my life.
Tips:

For superlative sentences, we have 2 different options:

1. We can use the word the before the superlative:

Example: She is the most intelligent person in the class.

2. We can use a possessive before the superlative:

Example: Paulas most beautiful friend is Sarah. / Their oldest son is 25 years.

3. The opposite of most is least and is commonly used with long adjectives:
Example: This is the least interesting movie I have ever seen.
Balance: Same level.

Expression: Example:

1. The same + noun (sustantivo) + as Their car is the same color as ours.

2. (not) as + adjective + as Tom is as tall as John. / Tom is not as tall as John.

3. Similar to + noun Its very similar to my house.
