Introduction
Samples:
-24 pupils from Sekolah Kebangsaan Serendah, Hulu Selangor

-a survey research
-Language Background Scale (Baker, 2001)
-The survey consisted of three main questions. The questions are:

1. In which language do YOU speak to the following people?


2. In which language do the following people speak TO YOU?
3. Which language do YOU use with the following?

-The survey form was in table form and the samples were only needed to select one
answer for each questions by marking or ticking the answers related to them
Data gathering
24 pupils that were randomly selected on Friday, 7th April 2017

The session was a 30 minutes session and the survey forms were
collected right after the samples have finished them.

The data were analyse and the result for each answers were
calculated by using the tally sheets

Based on the data from the tally sheets, the researchers used
descriptive analysis technique to analyze the findings of the survey.

The final data were then presented in the form of graphs that were
further discussed in the discussion section of the report.

Orang Asli, Malay and Indian pupils use mostly their mother
tongue to talk to the people around them especially their
family members.

This shown that their dominance languages are their mother


tongue.

However, they used their mother tongue and second language


equally when they speak to the teachers especially Malay
Pupils.

Have similarities as in the language they speak to
other people.

The dominance language is their mother tongue.

Their family members like parents and siblings

Different languages are used for different activities.

They use their mother tongue for religious purposes.

Orang Asli Pupils use their mother tongue for almost all
activities mother tongue is their dominance language

Malay pupils show equal used of both language


especially in activities related to entertainment like
watching TV, listening to the radio and reading comics
and newspaper.

Indian pupils also have the tendency to use English


language in their daily activities but Tamil language is
still their dominance language.
Discussion
socio-economic status
Most of them are from middle class families, while the rest are from upper
and lower class families.
tend to use their mother tongue to communicate with people around them
especially their family members.
only use, learn and listen to English language at school, especially during the
English language lesson in class.
at home, most of them said that they watch English programme from the
television and usually the programmes that they chose are cartoons and
movies
Pupils from upper class family- tend to get the opportunity to use English
language with people around them. They also tend to be
exposed with materials such as reading materials which are in English
language.
Those who are from middle and low class family do not receive enough
exposure to materials such as reading materials in English language restrict
them from using other language than their mother tongue
environmental factor
in which refers to the domain or context that the
samples usually face every day.
The samples are dominant in one language, which
is their own mother

Conclusion
Most of the pupils are weak bilingual
Limited use of the second language
they only use English at school
The only exposure of the second language is at
school
Their dominance language are their mother
tongue
Use mother tongue most of the time especially
when communicate to the people around them
