Do you notice any changes after you smell the food?

Inability to

The
Digestive
System
8 organs working together

Food poop!

Gives body energy and

nutrients

Can all happen in 10-70 hours

The Mouth
Where digestion starts
Mechanical: Teeth crush food
mastication
Chemical: Saliva breaks down food
salivation
Tongue helps with swallowing

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mouth
You produce 1-2 liters of saliva everyday! _Nose_Lateral_Sagittal.png
Esophagus
Passes the bolus from the mouth to
the stomach
Uses squeezing and relaxing muscles
peristalsis

The esophagus is about 10 inches long and

it takes 10 seconds for food to go from the
mouth to the stomach

Food from mouth to stomach
Stomach
Mechanical: Squeezes and relaxes
to break down food churning
Chemical: Makes acids to break
down food
Food turns into chyme

Stomach acid is so acidic that it could

burn through metal!

Helper organs

We have 3 helper
organs that use
chemical digestion
to help break
down our food
Liver
Largest and heaviest single
organ
Above the stomach
Makes a fluid called bile
Breaks down food into small bits

The liver can regrow its parts, just like

the leg of a starfish!
GallBladder
Little pouch that sits on the liver
Holds the bile
Squirts the bile into the intestines
Bile helps break up large globules
of chyme into small globules

You can live without a gallbladder!

Pancreas
Below the liver and behind the
stomach
Shaped like a feather
Makes a juice that has
enzymes that break down
food
Makes baking soda to make
food less acidic in the intestines.
The word pancreas in Greek means
all meat and various countries eat
https://healthcare.utah.edu/gi/pancreatic-disease.php
the pancreas of many animals
Helper
Organs

Lets watch the bile

and pancreatic
juice use chemical
digestion to break
up food
Small Intestine
Connected to the stomach
Start of the absorption of food
Connected to the Gallbladder and
Pancreas since they assist with
digestion and absorption of food

The small intestine is over 20 ft long. Its

the longest part of the digestive tract!
Large Intestines
5 feet long, connected to the small
intestines
What's left? Fiber, vitamins, water
Absorbs water and vitamins from
your food
Microscopic bacteria break down
the fiber = farts
10- 70 hours later

1 liter of chyme into 1 cup of poop http://www.innerbody.com/anatomy/digestive/large-intestine

Rectum
The last stop
At the end of the large intestines
Holds our poop
Makes mucus so it's easy to poop
You have a poop muscle!

Most of your poop is not undigested food, its

bacteria from colon. http://www.innerbody.com/anatomy/digestive/large-intestine
Poop Investigation
Your poop can tell you about your digestive
health!

Need to eat more fruits and vegetables

Need to drink more water

Something is bothering the digestive

system

Food Safety!
Game time!!!!
Lets
Digest it!
When you go home,
share a fun fact you
learned today with
your parents!
