Writing
 WHAT IS AN EDITORIAL?
An editorial is an analytical interpretation of
significant issues, usually read to get a better
understanding of the controversial issues buffeting
the nation and to be reinforced of ones opinion.
A conventional editorial might be defined as a
critical interpretation of significant, usually
contemporary, events so that the publications
typical reader will be informed, influenced, or
entertained.

* Critical means evaluating, not fault-finding

 The editorial is designed to give
meaning to bare facts, to provide
setting, sequence and significance.
Much foreign, economic and
political news is meaningless
without interpretation. Interpretation
makes the news vital,, living
incident to readers who otherwise
would be only perplexed by the
factual statements.
 CHARACTERISTICS OF AN
EDITORIAL

An editorial is the position of the

paper, not of the person.
It is current.
It is relevant.

Conclusion, summary, or appeal for
action
 TYPES OF EDITORIALS
Informative Editorialmay define terms
and issues, identify persons and factors,
provide historical and geographical
background when necessary.
Argumentative Editorialtakes a stand on
a controversial issue and lives up to its reasons
in a logical way. It may present both sides of
the controversy.
Editorial of Persuasionenlists the readers
support of a program or a plan of action. It
gives reasons for support in closing; it cites
advantages to be gained or contains a plan of
action.
 Editorial of Interpretation or
Commentexplains the significance
of a recent news event in relation to
other events.
Editorial of Criticismanalyzes the
faults in a situation. It usually suggests
a solution but it may end with a
question regarding the remedy.
Editorial of Appreciationwritten to
praise to give commendation or tribute
to a certain individual, institution, or
project.
 Editorial of Entertainmentlight and
short but may subtly suggest a point
while it amuses.
Editorial of Refutationwritten in
answer to an appropriate opinion
expressed in another publication or
even in casual talk.
News Editorialsummary of events
pertaining to one topic. It is presented
in such a way that the editorial opinion
is clear, whether stated or merely
implied.
 Editorialof Analogypresents a comparison
of two entirely different things in order to
explain the unfamiliar through the familiar,
the complicated through the simple, and the
abstract through the concrete.
Pooled Editorialresorted to if the issue
involved was very serious that the editors of
various newspapers believed their papers
have to address the issue by coming out
jointly with a common editorial, which they
may or may not title as a pooled editorial.
 WRITING THE EDITORIAL
Be brief.
Write simply and directly.
Be impersonal. Use the Third Person or
we. Never use I except in quotations.
Be sincere.
Write clearly.
Write vigorously.
Present facts rather than mere opinion.
Be authoritative, but dont preach.
 Use
various devices to catch and
keep the readers interest, such as:

a striking title
a good lead the bait
illustration in the form of a brief narrative
authority to support your facts or
arguments
analogy
comparison and contrast
End the editorial appropriately.
Relate the editorial to the lives
of the readers.
 EVALUATING AN EDITORIAL
Are the form and style appropriate to the
content and purpose?
Does it have a purpose and does it seem to
accomplish that purpose?
Does it make the reader think?
Does it reflect the writers originality and
ingenuity?
Is the writing clear, vigorous, direct and
simple?
Is the diction exact, not ambiguous?
 Does the editorial reflect clear and
logical thinking?
Does it give evidence of accurate
knowledge?
Does it sound sincere?
Does the opening sentence get the
reader involved?
Are the paragraphs comparatively
short?
Is the editorial brief and pointed?

Cinderella without the Happily Ever After?

One of the most enchanting, not to mention

popular, fairytales of all time is the Disney version of
the classic tale Cinderella. Everyone is familiar with
the story of the orphaned girl who made friends
with mice and birds, her evil stepmother and
horrible stepsisters, her Fairy Godmother, and her
glass slipper. Today the term Cinderella refers to a
person who unexpectedly meets success after a
period of hardships and trials. Many people can be
identified as modern day Cinderellas. Even people
like Vice President Jejomar Binay.
 Like Cinderella, Binay was orphaned at a very tender
age. Because of his parents untimely deaths, he was left
to live with his uncle. Though in his story there is a lack of
evil stepmothers and prince charmings, the hardships the
experienced could very well be their modern equivalent.
And like Cinderella, he got past his obstacles.
Binay went on to become a lawyer first, then
eventually a politician. After his run as the longest
serving mayor of Makati, Binay is now, as everyone
knows, the Vice President of the country. Given this
long and successful career in politics, it is a no-
brainer that he and his family are now very wealthy.
Recently though, it has been hinted that they
might actually be wealthier than they seem. Reports
about the Binays hidden properties have been on
the news for months. The family has been under
criticism ever since.
 Could the Vice Presidents Cinderella story be
repeating itself, only this time to his entire family? If it is, their
Fairy Godmother better not to be too late to help them, or
this will be a Cinderella story without the happily ever after.

Masalimuot na Gusot
Patuloy pa rin ang imbestigasyon sa mga di-umanoy kayamanang
hindi idineklara ni Bise-Presidente Jejomar Binay sa kanyang Statement
of Assets and Liabilities Networth na siyang umani ng batikos galling sa
taumbayan. Ang kaganapan na ito ay mala-Cinderella ang kwento.

Noong nakaraang taon pa sinimulang imbestigahan ang

kasong ito at dito ibinunyag ng dating Vice-mayor ng Makati City na si
Ernesto Mercado na may hinihinalang Hacienda Binay na ekta-
ektarya ang lawak na siyang matatagpuan daw sa Batangas.

Tila katulad ng kapares na sapatos ni Cinderella na hinanap

ng mga imbestigador ang mga iba pang tinatagong kayamanan ni
Binay sa iba pang panig ng bansa.
 Ang 350 ektaryang lupa na sumasaklaw sa tatlong barangay sa
Rosario, Batangas na sinasabing Hacienda Binay ay inaangkin daw
ng Sunchamp, isang korporasyon na sabi naman ng guard ng farm.

Giit din ng kampo nina Binay na ito daw ay panggigipit sa

kanilang pamilya lalo na raw dahil papalapit na ang halalan 2016 na
kagaya naman sa panggigipit ng tatlong step sisters ni Cinderella.

Isa pa rito ay ang paghahamon ng Senador na si Antonio

Trillanes ng isang debate sa pagitan nila ni Binay at ito raw ay tungkol sa
kanyang mga kayamang itinago na sa bandang huli ay inayawan ni
Binay sa panayam sa kanya noong kaarawan niya.

Ang taumbayan ay may hating pagpapasya ukol rito at ayon

sa iba ay panandalian lamang daw and lahat ng iyon para kay Binay
na maihahalintulad naman sa buhay ni Cinderella na panandaliang
magkakaroon ng magarang buhay ngunit pagdating ng takdang oras
ay babalik sa dati.
 Hindi naman lingid sa ating kaalaman ang pinagdaanan ni
Binay na dumaan muna sa butas ng karayom bago nakamit ang
kaginhawaan sa buhay kagaya sa sitwasyon ni Cinderella na mula sa
wala ay nagtagumpay. Ngunit ikanga, Walang sinumang mas
nakakataas sa batas. Mananagot ang dapat managot kung
nakalalabag sa batas.

Kagaya ng kinahinatnan o naging wakas ng kwentong

Cinderella, sanay lumabas ang katotohanan. Sa kwentong iyon,
ipinakita ang pagtanggap kung anong mayroon siya at mamuhay na
kuntento. Ganito sana ang mangyari sa kaso ni dating Bise-Presidente,
ang pagkalantad ng pawang katotohanan at pagtama sa mga
kamalian. Nararapat na magkaroon ng mas komprehensibong
pagtrato sa imbestigasyon dahil isa itong masalimuot na gusot.
