ETHNIC INSTRUMENTS

OF THE CORDILLERAS

Long before the coming of Spaniards
the Filipinos already had
instruments the have been handed
down for centuries. These
instruments can be made up with
bamboo, shell, wood, skin, vine, hair,
and other materials.
In Cordilleras the instruments may be
classified using the Hornbostelsachs
system of classification
The systems are divided into the
following:
Chordophone- any stringed instrument
Aerophone- any musical wind instrument

Membranephone- any musical instrument in


which the sound is produced by striking,
rubbling, or blowing against a membrane
stretched over a frame
Idiophone- any musical instruments sound
produced by the way of the instruments itself.
CHORDOPHONE

1. Jews Harp- this instrument is also known as


jaws harp . This instrument is made out of
bamboo with a thin flexible tongue made to
vibrate by plucking the tip of the instrument or
by pulling a string attached to its end.

2. Musical Bow- a musical instruments shaped


like a bow, consists of a bamboo or wooden stave
or length of mature reed, which may curved by
the tension of one to two strings across its ends.
AEROPHONE
1. Nose Flute-its also know as the kalleleng from
Bontoc, tungali and enonggol among the Kaling
etc. It has a blowing hole bored through the
instruments node, where the player positions
his nostrils to sound the instruments.

2. Bamboo Pipes in a Row/Panpipes-this is consist


of varying sizes of open pipes tied together. The
Panpipes are also known as di-was.
MEMBRANEPHONE
Drums-this is played at festivals
celebrations,processions, and rituals, are of
many varieties.this is often made of wood,while
drumheads consist of goat,deer,cow,pig, or reptile
skin.
IDIOPHONE
1. Bamboo stamping tube-is musical instrument
made from one segment of a node , and the top
end open.
2. Bamboo Buzzer- its a musical instrument
made from variety of bamboo that has long,
slender internodes. It is played by grasping the
hands with one hand and striking the
instruments tongue against the lower palm of
Kalinga andIsned,bilbil.
3. Quill-shaped tube-is an instrument made from
one inter-node of a long slender variety of
bamboo.the end is held in the hand has a close
node.
4. Bamboo leg xylophone-is a set of bamboo blades
in graduated sizes, and with tapered ends. The
instrument is usually mounted on the
instruments is usually mounted on the players
upper thights or from knees down to the ankles.

5. Flant gongs-made of bronze,brass, or iron,are


found among the Isneg, Tinguian, Kalinga,
Bontoc, Ibaloy, Kankanay, ifugao, and ilongot, for
whom gong playing is part of peace-pact
gatherings.
