What are Tablets

A Tablet is a portable computing device which looks much
like a detached screen from a conventional notebook
computer, or perhaps a hand-held computer.
The Tablet generally offers some kind of handwriting
recognition, and uses modified versions of popular
applications that are designed for stylus input. The user
interacts with the computer by drawing directly on the
screen with the stylus.
Tablet features a full-sized color screen, an internal hard
drive, and other features associated with a standard
computer.
Through the use of several apps, teachers can provide
notes, display steps and processes to problems, initiate
the display of media (pausing and resuming as needed
from any location in the classroom), and allow students to Tablets in classrooms
participate from their own seats in a variety of interactive
activities. This is different than the remote control of a
connected teacher laptop to a traditional interactive
board.

Schools 5 Year Strategy 7

Learning facilities/Aids Tablets

Challenges
Students have identified some drawbacks of bringing tablets into the classroom, such as the difficulty of
taking notes on the tablet. The auto correct typing function can create very interesting passages as well as
frustrations. In the study, more than half the students reported feeling frustrated when highlighting text and
taking notes within e-books on the iPad.
Another drawback was the fact that multiple windows or files couldnt be kept open, side-by-side, on the
tablet, unlike a full-fledged computer.
Though tablets allow students to learn at their own pace, some educators are worried about how to handle a
classroom full of independent learners. Many educators expressed concern about monitoring students while
they use their tablet. The biggest problem with tablets is students visiting sites other than those for learning.
Until all tablets can use all applications/websites there are limits to how well the tools can be used in the
classroom. We must select tools that are compatible with the greatest number of devices.

Even though there are potential promises of educational impacts of tablets, we should weigh the potential
challenges as well before utilizing tablets into teaching and learning. Therefore, if using a tablet is helpful to aids
student success, we should embrace it to the extent it facilitates the learning process

What is Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 ?

It gives 18 students the experience of having their own Windows computer using just three host computers
Students have their own stations so they can work independently
Just as if they each had a personal computer (PC), students can personalize Windows Internet Explorer, customize
their desktops, and save their class work in private or public folders and on personal flash drives.
Enables teachers to guide every student's experience. Teachers have access to an easy-to-use MultiPoint Dashboard
on their stations, from which they can interact with students and guide their work. Work with individual students to
help them stay on task.
Small images, or "thumbnails," on the MultiPoint Dashboard give teachers a bird's-eye view of each student's
desktop. They can zoom in for a closer look at what a student is doing, communicate with a student via instant
messaging, or take control of a student's desktop to demonstrate something or make corrections.
Work with the class as a group. When teachers want to focus student attention, they can block all station activity.
They can also launch or close programs and restrict Internet access to specific websitesfor example, those relevant
to a particular lesson. Or, if teachers want everyone to see what's on a desktoptheir own or a student'sa single
click projects it at every station.
Teachers can also save files to a shared folder, making it easy for students to collaborate.
Launch a program on one or all desktops. The MultiPoint Dashboard shows what programs are installed on the host
computer, enabling teachers to quickly launch a program on every station.
A system that's easy to learn and use because Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 is built on the familiar Windows
environment. Any teacher with Windows experience will be productive in a short time. And after technical staff have
set them up, starting the stations each day is as uncomplicated as turning on the host computer.

Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 addresses the
problem of affordability by giving each student his or
her own station with a monitor, a keyboard, and a
mouse; these stations are then connected to a single
computer and share its processing power. The teacher
monitors and manages the learning experience of
every student from a central station, extending the
ability to guide classroom activities and help students
individually.

What are Smart boards?

Interactive whiteboard that uses touch detection for user
input (for example scrolling and right mouse-click) in the
same way as normal PC input devices.
The 800 series interactive whiteboard introduced a 'flick and
scroll' feature
Interactive whiteboard operates as part of a system that
includes the interactive whiteboard, a computer, a projector
and white boarding software - either Smart Notebook
collaborative learning software for education, or Smart
Meeting Pro software for business.
The components are connected wirelessly or via USB or serial
cables.
A projector connected to the computer displays the desktop

accepts touch input from a finger, pen or other solid object.
Smart Board interactive whiteboards are also available as a
front-projection flat-panel display interactive surfaces that
fit over plasma or LCD display panels

Schools 5 Year Strategy 11

Learning facilities/Aids - Standalone
Smartboards

Advantages
Dual touch collaboration: With dual touch, two students can work together using pens, fingers or other objects
Seamless interaction: Switch between pen, finger and eraser easily through the pen tray or Notebook software
Intuitive control: Rotate, zoom and flick using natural touch gestures
Freestyle interaction: Every surface inch is a collaborative workspacemultiple students, multiple actions
It helps teachers engage children, it jazzes up your lessons, it allows you to save what you write, and adds some
interactivity to your classroom. These are all positive traits, and things that teachers are trying to do everyday.
The digital screen allows images from the computer to be displayed on a board5. It can also be modified on the
screen itself, using a pen or a highlighting tool. Its touch screen feature allows teachers to run programs directly
from the screen simply by tapping the application with her finger and even makes scrolling easy.

Smart Boards are becoming an essential component of every classroom. Reasons include:
It can accommodate different learning styles. Tactical learners can use the screen and learn by touching and
marking at the board, audio learners can have a discussion and visual learners can observe the teaching on the
board
It is neater and does not have the cleanliness hassle and is therefore easier to maintain

Ideas on how you can use Smart Boards in the classroom

Use it as a tool for note-taking. Students can come and write important points on the board.
Brainstorming in the classroom can be fun with a Smart Board. You can not only put together text/ ideas but
also images, diagrams or videos.
Classroom games can be played with ease on the board. Board games in particular can be played on the board
itself.
All forms of media videos, photographs, graphs, maps, illustrations, games, etc. can be used on the board,
making it incredibly dynamic in nature. This expands the range of content that you can use for teaching or
presenting new information.
A lot of new software is available for free on the internet that can be easily integrated. There are many forums
and websites that aim to help teachers by providing Smart Board ideas and activities.
The Smart Board is tomorrows technology and is bound to change the look of classrooms forever. Using smart
boards in your classroom can help you stay ahead with technology that could make the education process
simpler and perhaps even more productive.
