RSS PHASE SHIFTING DEVICE ALTERNATOR Phantom loading test When the current ratings of meter under test is very high , a test with actual load arrangements consume considerable waste of power . To avoid this phantom loading is used . Phantom loading consists of supplying the pressure circuit from a required normal voltage supply and the current circuit from separate low voltage supply . It is possible to circulate the rated current through the current circuit with a low voltage supply as the impedance of this circuit is very low. In this arrangement the total power required is that due to the small pressure coil current at rated normal voltage, plus the power supplied due to the current circuit current at low voltage supply. The total power consumed by phantom loading is very small as compared to direct loading. Testing of energy meter using RSS RSS-rotating substandard meter This test is conducted for a short period of time hence called short period test. A RSS meter is used along with the meter under test. The current coils of two meters are connected in series and pressure coils are connected in parallel. The two meters are started and stopped simultaneously for short period of time. When the predetermined load is adjusted, then the number of revolutions for a certain period of time is observed for both the meters in same time If the constants of meters are same then error can be directly obtained. But if meter constants are different then error is required to be calculated. ENERGY METER testing using phase shifting device METHOD 2 TRIVECTOR METER MAXIMUM DEMAND INDICATOR
It is used to record the maximum power
consumed by the consumer during a particular period. It is available ass a unit together with an energy meter. The energy meter records total energy consumption while the maximum demand indicator indicates the maximum value of the average power over equal intervals of time. Maximum demand indicator Advantages: Accurate maximum demand is measured. The scale is uniform. Disadvantages: Very costly due to complicated gearing mechanism. If the maximum demand occurs in a time interval and continues over only a small part of the next interval then it can not be measured accurately.
