Preface
First and foremost, I would like to thank Madam Adibah Binti Khalid or Mommy Deeba for
her talk on the pedagogical strategies on how to teach pupils and to prepare them to answer
the newly-formatted UPSR Questions. Bear in mind, that these pedagogical strategies are not
restricted to Year 6 Teachers or teachers who are teaching Level 2 pupils only; but they are
also applicable to all teachers who are teaching English. I would also like to thank Mr. Ahmad
Syamil Abdul Rahim whose module A for English UPSR 014, I took as my main reference in
teaching the said section.
When it comes to how well we teach, and how well our pupils are able to
grasp the essence of our teaching, it does not fall on us being optionists or not, alone. Yes,
knowledge on the subject matter is of vital importance but, pedagogical teaching strategies
and approaches also play a huge part in ensuring that teachers are able to teach and pupils
on the other hand; are able to learn.
I would also like to thank my friend and colleague, Mrs. Hadrawati Abdul Hamid
for being my sparing partners with whom I discussed a lot with. As the saying goes, when
it comes to knowledge; two heads are better than one.
I would also like to extend my gratitude to the school administrators; our
headmaster Encik Hasim @ Mohammad Bin Haji Obong, Puan Hajah Mumin Haji Madia (GKP1),
Encik Jaafar Ahmad (GPKHEM), Encik Mohd. Shukari Ismail (GPK Ko-Kum) and Encik Arman
Saini (GPK Petang), for their support in all our activities and plans thus far.
Thank you to all of my friends, and colleagues; my fellow English teachers;
optionist or non-optionist, for willing to bear with us, teaching English to our 938 pupils. I hope
that with this module we would be able to gain insight and be inspired to be the best English
teachers that we can be. Again, this module is only a mean for me to share, it does not mean
that this module is the best, let alone make it A MUST to be followed. I hope that in return, this
will encourage my fellow English teachers to share their own methods and strategies as well.
Last but not least, I would thank God, the Almighty for without Him, no thing is
possible.
So in order for the pupils to be able to understand and to write in English; they must know

2. The use of singing and music.
- Mommy Deeba is a strong believer in the use of music in T&L session. She uses a lot of
songs to deliver her lessons as she had admitted proudly, she is the singing headmistress.
-Mommy Deeba uses songs which can help her to teach certain grammar items, she is
focusing on. She said, the lesson became much more interesting and the pupils paid attention
to her lesson better.
-She also use songs which require the kids to do physical movements accordingly.
For example she uses the youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vphZwqus5E
in teaching preposition. So as the pupils sing the song, they also follow the movements
of the singer in the video.

3. The use of 21st Century Learning tools
i) Classroom arrangement
ii) Technology (LCD Projector) available in each classroom
iv) Co-operative learning
-According to Mommy Deeba, she uses technology tools extensively and she encourages her
teachers to do the same. In order to minimize the time wasted in setting up the tools, she
arranged for the essential tools like LCD projector to be set up permanently in most of the
classes; hence, the teachers only have to plug in their laptops and they are ready to go.
-She also prepares, for each classes, their own mini-whiteboards for the pupils to use.
The pupils are seated in groups and they have their own mini-whiteboards which they will use
to write their group discussions. This saves paper and is more user-friendly as they can
easily erase and rewrite things on whiteboards.
-Mommy Deeba will give the pupils some tasks to finish within a certain time allocated
(in her t&L session) , in which they have to go to the various learning corners in her school to
search for information to complete the task. She said that, the key to making this activity a
success is discipline. The pupils must be trained, to do the task within the time boundary and
that they must do the task in a co-ordinated manner. This activity is fun, because it allows the
pupils to move and go out of the class to search for information.

According to Mommy Deeba, this is the period of time, where she finally introduce writing
to her pupils. She said, she will start to focus on Paper 2 (014) by this time.
By this time, the pupils are supposed have the right amount of basic
Grammar knowledge. Thus, they are now able to write in English. Mommy Deeba strongly
suggests that, the pupils should be trained in building sentences in the simple present tense
and simple past tense forms only. She said that, teachers must avoid using continuous tenses
in answering the 014 (English Writing).

1. Writing Mechanics Techniques
- Train the pupils to write in the examination writing pad, so that they are used to writing
on the paper size equals to the real examination paper. Mommy Deeba even went to extreme
measures, as to give the pupils the real feel of writing on real UPSR examination paper, by
photocopying real UPSR examination answer sheet and binding them for each of her Year 6
pupils.
- The pupils were also told to write in organised manner in order for them to keep track of
their word count; as Mommy Deeba said, the most important criteria for the pupils to be
awarded marks is;
Task fulfilled basically means that what is stated in the instruction must be followed.
The word count is stated in the in instruction hence, if the pupils write under or over the word
count stated, they will be penalized. If the word count is under, they will be given low start-up
mark and is the word count is over, the sentences after the maximum word count will not be
read. In both cases, the pupils will lose their potential marks.
- The pupils are trained to organise their words in a certain way as shown below;

- The pupils write each word within the numbered section so that, not only will they be able
to produce legible handwriting but it will also be easier for them to count their words.
- For the harapan lulus pupils we can train them to write the minimum word count and for
The excellent pupils; we train them to write up until the maximum word count possible.

-I focused on the examination questions, part by part during this month. I noticed from
Mommy Deebas FB Update, that she is doing the same technique as well.
- We have two modules for the kids right now, which is very ideal for what I have in mind.
For the first module set, I went through the 013 first.
013 (Q 1 20 )
i) The pupils answer question 1 until question 20 first.
ii) The pupils are allowed to refer to the dictionary to search for the meaning of difficult
words. The pupils must bear in mind that they are searching for the most appropriate meaning
according to context.
iii) The pupils are trained to use highlighters to highlight the key words. The key words are
often the grammatical items.
iv) The pupils must always read the questions at least three times until they get the idea of
what the question is about.
v) Choose the most polite, appropriate and suitable to the context, answer.

i) The pupils use their own experience in real life to build sentences; whether they are
required to ask questions as the first person speaker or write responds as the second person
speaker.

ii) The pupils read the Questions and answer them using complete sentences. Example;

#Dont accept if the pupils simply answer Yes or No.
iii) The pupils may use the dictionary to search for the meaning of difficult words but I forbid
them to use the dictionary to compose sentences. Train the pupils to use the vocabulary
they have acquired (only words they understand) when they compose their answer. They have
the knowledge; they are only lazy to dig into their memory.

014 (Section A and Section B(i)
i) Train the pupils to really mind their spelling and writing. No marks will be awarded for
incomprehensible writing and incorrectly spelt words.
ii) Train the pupils to read the sentences which they are completing in Section A. Make sure
they write the correct answer in the blank spaces provided and not just lifting directly from
the given information.
iii) Train the pupils to read and understand the instruction given for Section B(i). Fill in the
needed information only.
