What is tsunami?
Tsunami (pron: 'soo-nar-me') is a Japanese
word; 'tsu' meaning harbour and 'nami'
meaning wave. The phenomenon is usually
associated with earthquakes, landslides or
volcanic eruptions in, or adjacent to oceans, and
results in sudden movement of the water
column. Until recently tsunami were called tidal
waves, even though the event has nothing to do
with tides.
A tsunami is different from a wind generated surface
wave on the ocean. The passage of a tsunami involves
the movement of water from the surface to the
seafloor which means its speed is controlled by water
depth. Consequently, as the wave approaches land
and reaches increasingly shallow water it slows.
However, the water column still in deeper water is
moving slightly faster and catches up, resulting in the
wave bunching up and becoming much higher. A
tsunami is often a series of waves and the first may
not necessarily be the largest.
When a tsunami travels over a long and gradual slope,
it allows time for the tsunami to grow in wave height.
This is called shoaling and typically occurs in shallow
water less than 100m. Successive peaks can be
anywhere from five to 90 minutes apart. In the open
ocean, even the largest tsunami are relatively small
with wave heights of less than one metre. The
shoaling effect can increase this wave height to a
degree such that the tsunami could potentially reach
an onshore height of up to 30 metres above sea level.
However, depending on the nature of the tsunami
and the nearshore surroundings, the tsunami may
create only barely noticeable ripples.
How tsunami happen?
Tsunamis occur due to their impulsive
disturbance of the sea water due to a
change in the form of sea floor abruptly.
This happens for several reasons, namely
because of the earthquake, volcanic
eruption, landslide (avalanche) happened
bottom of the sea and the sky falling
objects (meteor) from outer space. Of all
these reasons, seismic earth was a major
cause of Tsunami.

Earthquakes towing cause interference caused by sea
water due to changing seabed profile that is generally due
to tectonic earthquakes and could lead to soil movement
perpendicular (vertical) to the surface of the sea or the
earth's surface. If the horizontal ground motion at sea
level, it will not happen Tsunami.

caused by the earthquake at sea was
horizontal, but the seismic energy is large, it
can lead to the collapse of the cliffs / hills
automatic sea runtuhannya motion is
perpendicular to the surface of the sea. So
although it is not an earthquake that directly
caused vertical ground motion, but because
the condition of the cliff / hill at sea is
already unstable and due to gravity and ocean
currents, resulting in landslides and caused
the tsunami.
Landslides on the seabed and volcanic debris
can also cause interference with seawater to
generate a tsunami. The quake that caused the
movement perpendicular to the layer of earth.
As a result, the sea floor heaving suddenly so
that the balance of seawater on it undisturbed.
Similarly, cosmic or meteor that fell from above.
If the size of the meteor or landslide is big
enough, it can happen megatsunami which
reaches hundreds of meters.
