CHAPTER 7

INPUT AND OUTPUT: Extending Capabilities of

Computers and Mobile Devices

Objectives:

Differentiate among various types of keyboards: Standard, compact, on-screen,

virtual, ergonomic, gaming and wireless
Describe characteristics of various pointing devices: mouse, touchpad, and trackball
Describe various uses of touch screens
What is Input?

Input is any data and instructions entered into the memory of a computer.

LOOKBACK!
Data is a collection of unprocessed items, including text, numbers, images, audio, and
video. Once DATA is in MEMORY, a computer or mobile device interprets and executes
instructions to process the data into INFORMATION.
SOFTWARE
It is a series of related instructions, organized for a common purpose, that tells
a computer or mobile device what tasks to perform and how to perform them.

Software Developer

when they write programs or apps, they usually enter the instructions into the
computer or mobile device by using keyboard, mouse, or other input method. Then
they will store it into a file that a user can execute it (run).
COMMAND
It is an instruction that causes a program or app to perform a specific action. Thus,
programs and apps respond to commands that a user issues.

Commands like: touching an area on a screen, pressing keys on the keyboard,

clicking a mouse button to control a pointer on the screen and more.

It is an instruction a user issues by responding to a message displayed by a

program or app.

For example, when a program or app asks the question, Do you want to save
the changes made to this file?, and you will respond with the instruction of
YES or NO.
KEYBOARD
It is an input device that contains keys you press to enter data and
instructions into a computer or mobile device.
What is in the keyboard?
Typing Area
-Includes letters of the alphabet, numbers, punctuation marks, and other basic
keys.
Function Key
-Which are labeled with the letter F followed by a number, are special keys programmed to issue
commands to a computer.
Toggle Key
-It is a key that switches between two states each time a user presses the key.
-Example: CAPSLOCK and NUM LOCK

Navigation Key
-is used to move insertion point in application left, right, up and down.
-Such as ARROW KEYS, PAGE UP(PG UP), PAGE DOWN (PG DN)

Keyboard Shortcut
-is considered a key whereas one or more keyboard keys that you press to perform an operating system
or application-related system.
TYPES OF KEYBOARD
STANDARD KEYBOARD
-is used in a Desktop. This keyboard typically has 101 to 105 keys, which include function keys along
the top and a numeric keypad on the right.
COMPACT KEYBOARD
-is smaller than a standard keyboard and usually does not include numeric keypad or navigation
keys.
ERGONOMIC KEYBOARD
-has a design that reduces the chance of repetitive strain injuries (RSIs) of wrist and hand.
GAMING KEYBOARD
-it is a keyboard designed specifically for users who enjoy playing games on the computer.
-This typically include PROGRAMMABLE KEYS.
WIRELESS KEYBOARD
-is a battery-powered device that transmit data to the computer or mobile device using wireless
technology.

POINTING DEVICES
Pointer is a small symbol on the screen whose location and shape change as a user moves a
pointing device.

MOUSE
is a pointing device that fits under the palm of your hand comfortably.

TWO TYPES:

Optical Mouse
-uses optical sensors that emit and sense light to detect the mouses movements.

-Similarly, laser mouse uses laser sensors that emit and sense light to detect the mouses movements.

Touch Mouse
-is a touch-sensitive mouse that organizes touch gestures, in addition to detecting movement of the
mouse and traditional click and scroll operations.

-For example, you press a location on a touch mouse to stimulate a click, sweep your thumb on the
mouse to scroll pages, or slide multiple fingers across the mouse to zoom.
TRACKBALL
is a stationary pointing device with a ball on its top or side.
FACT: The ball in most trackball is about the size of a Ping-Pong Ball.

TOUCHPAD
is a small, flat, rectangular pointing device that is sensitive to pressure and
motion.
are found most often on LAPTOP and CONVERTIBLE TABLETS.
TOUCH SCREENS
is a touch-sensitive display and very convenient because they do not require a
separate device for input. e.g. Smartphones, Tablets, Laptops, and more.

A gesture is a motion you make on a touch screen with the tip of one or more fingers or your
hand.
A multi-touch touch screens that recognize multiple points of contact.
TOUCH INPUT
a primary method of Input.

What are the devices that utilize Touch Input?

Desktop Monitors
Screens on Laptops and Tablets
Smartphones
Wearable Devices
Portable Media Player
Digital Cameras
Kiosks
Navigation Systems
