RAIN WATER HARVESTING

1
LIFE WITH WATER RWH
LIFE W/O WATER RWH
PREVIEW RWH

1. Water : facts

2. Rain Water Harvesting What, Why and How

3. Water crisis at Ranchi

4. Initiatives taken at Brahmastra Corps

WATER FACTS : GLOBAL RWH

Only 1% fresh Water accessible

Acute shortage of water due to

1. Population explosion &
urbanisation
2. Global warming
3. Rapid melting of glaciers
4. Over use by devp countries
5. Industrial & municipal pollution
6. 50% rain water - surface run off
7. Over expl of grnd water
8. Ltd rech of grnd water table
WATER FACTS : INDIA RWH

1. India has 4% share of fresh water to support 18 % share of population

2. 60% crop is rain fed

3. Annual per capita availability decreased from 6000 cum in 1947 to 1500
cum in 2016

4. 30 % Indians have no access to safe drinking water

5. Water Train ??

6. Annual rain fall approx 1170 mm - higher than global average of 800 mm

7. 50% rain water wasted as surface run off

There is a need to have Rain Water Harvesting

RAIN WATER HARVESTING RWH

1. Collection, conveyance and storage of rain water at surface / sub-

surface aquifers, before it is lost as surface run-off
2. Rain water forced to the ground water reservoir faster than under
natural conditions to enable :-
(a) Recycle and reuse of rain water
(b) Mitigate subsoil degeneration
(c) Improve agro and eco sys
(d) Reduce floods, soil erosion and drought
RWH : GOVT AND MES POLICY RWH

1. Govt bldgs with Plinth Area 100 Sqm+ to have RWH

2. Six states implemented Water Commission recommendations

3. All central engineering departments implementing RWH in phases

4. Auth wk In SOA 2009

5. At least one building per project to incorporate RWH

6. Extra cost for RWH may be included in RIC

7. Wk in conslt with CGWB till capacity bldg

WATER CRISIS AT RANCHI RWH

1. Water sup based on three dams at Kanke, Rukka and Hatia on

Subernrekha River

2. Water in dams depleting rapidly due to evaporation and silting

3. Rapid urbanisation and industrialisation

4. Ground water depleting 1m per year due to over exploitation, may

exhaust in 10 yrs

5. Most of the open and shallow bore wells dried

6. Loc 600 m above MSL fast surface run off and ltd recharge
RAINFALL : RANCHI RWH

Total Rainfall 1400 mm

Rain fall in mm

1 mm Rainfall over 1m x 1m = 1 ltr

ROOF TOP RWH PROJECT : MUC RWH

Catchment Roof Area = 600 M2

Average Rain fall PA at Ranchi = 1,400 mm
Total water available for RWH = 8.4 lakh Ltr
