ROAD SAFETY, SOCIAL & ENVIRONMENTAL
EVALUATIONS
Selected Road
Location Issadeen town, Matara
Road Meera Road
Road Length 1.05km
Road Category Collector Road
Why Traffic Calming
needed
Meera road is a wide, straight road that runes
through a residential area. It has 5 intersection
within the 1.05 km length. Because of this,
average vehicle speed is about 70 km/h on this
road. This speed is too high for this road.
Traffic Calming Measures
Two traffic calming measures have been
implemented in the road.
Traffic Circle One of the junction has been added
in one intersection recently to reduce the speed.
Speed Bumps- Speed bumps has been added to
minor roads that connecting to this road.
Effectiveness of Traffic
Calming Devices
By interviewing local people that lives nearby, I
found that these measures are very effective in
terms of reducing the speed of vehicles. But it has
also found that there were many accidents
happened due to the traffic circle in the middle
of the rod.
Visibility
Traffic Circle has enough
visibility both day and night. But
speed bums do not have
enough visibility even in the
day time. And there are no
road signs to warn about the
speed bumps or the traffic
circle.
Measures to Make them
more Effective
Adding necessary traffic signs such as speed
bump ahead and traffic circle ahead.
Apply more a white strips to speedbumps to make
it more visible in the night time.
Replace speed bumps with rumble strips.
Widen the traffic circle and the intersection to
make it as a roundabout.
Thank You!
