HOW MUCH DO YOU
KNOW YOURSELF.
REFLECTIVE ACTIVITY
OJECTIVE

AFTER COMPLETING THIS ACTIVITY, THE TEACHER

SHOULD KNOW HIS/HER PERSONALITY BETTER IS AS FAR
AS IT AFFECTS THE TEACHING-LEARNING PROCESSES.
INSTRUCTION
THIS ACTIVITY IS INTENTED FOR SMALL GROUP
DISCUSSION WHERE TEACHERS REACT, SHARING WHAT
THEY THINK, FEEL, BELIEVE OT BY SHARING THEIR
EXPERIENCES IN THE FIELD OF TEACHING, TO THE
STIMULI, CRITICAL INCIDENTS AND REFLECTION CASES
PRESENTED.
CONTENT

III-REFLECTIVE ACTIVITY-INTENDED
TO CHALLENGE THE TEACHER TO
MAKE OBJECTIVE JUDGEMENT ON
HOW ONES PERSONALITY MIGHT BE
HARNESSED FOR GOOD AND
EFFECTIVE TEACHING.
Reflective teaching means looking at what you do in
the classroom, thinking about why you do it, and
thinking about if it works - a process of self-
observation and self-evaluation.

By collecting information about what goes on in our

classroom, and by analyzing and evaluating this
information, we identify and explore our own
practices and underlying beliefs. This may then lead
to changes and improvements in our teaching.

Reflective teaching is therefore a means of

professional development which begins in our
classroom.
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT AS A TEACHER?

Many teachers already think about their teaching

and talk to colleagues about it too. You might think or
tell someone that "My lesson went well" or "My
students didn't seem to understand" or "My students
were so badly behaved today."
If a lesson went well we can describe it and think
about why it was successful.
If the students didn't understand a language point
we introduced we need to think about what we did
and why it may have been unclear.
If students are misbehaving - what were they doing,
when and why?
Beginning the process of reflection
You may begin a process of reflection in response to
a particular problem that has arisen with one or your
classes, or simply as a way of finding out more about
your teaching. You may decide to focus on a
particular class of students, or to look at a feature of
your teaching
The first step is to gather information about what
happens in the class. Here are some different ways of
doing this.

Beginning the process of reflection

RECORDING LESSONS

Audio recordings can be useful for considering aspects

of teacher talk.
How much do you talk?
What about?
Are instructions and explanations clear?
How much time do you allocate to student talk?
How do you respond to student talk?
Video recordings can be useful in showing you aspects
of your own behaviour.
Where do you stand?
Who do you speak to?
How do you come across to the students?

Students Feedback
Ask the students of your performances. Also the
teacher will assess the student learning.

As a result of your reflection you may decide to do

something in a different way, or you may just decide
that what you are doing is the best way. And that is
what professional development is all about.

GROUP ACTIVITY: OUTPUT/RESULT

REACTION: EACH MEMBER OF THE GROUP SHOULD

REFPLECT ON AS A TEACHER HE LIKED AND THE
REASON WHY DURING HIS STUDENT DAYS.
EFFECT: COME UP WITH A ROSTER OF PERSONALITY
ATTRIBUTES FOR A GOOD AND EFFECTIVE TEACHER.
REFLECTION 1:

HE IS VERY HELPFUL AND HE EXPLAINS EVERYTHING.

WHEN WE START SOMETHING NEW, E.G. DECIMALS, HE
EXPLAIN IT ALL TO YOU. IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND,
YOU GO OUT HIS DESK, AND HE EXPLAIN THE PART
YOU DO NOT UNDERSATAND.
REFLECTION 2

TEACHERS ALWAYS ASKS THE CLASS IF ANYBODY IS

NOT SURE ABOUT THEIR WORK AND IF ANYBODY IS
NOT YET DONE,HE/SHE WILL REPEAT EVERYTHING
AGAIN. SOMETIMES THE MENTOR DOES THIS TWO TO
THREE TIMES IN ONE LESSON FOR EVERYONE TO
CATCH UP.
REPLECTION 3

THE KIND OF TEACHER I WORK BEST UNDER IS A

TEACHER WHO IS GOOD HUMORED. I DO WELL WITH
TEACHERS THAT MAKE ME ASK QUESTION INSTEAD OF
GIVING ME THE SOLUTION STRAIGHT AWAY. I THINK A
CERTAIN AMOUNT OF INDIVIDUAL ATTETION OUGHT
TO BE GIVEN THE WORST TEACHERS ARE THE ONES
THAT SET WORK AND LEAVE YOU ALONE ALL LESSON.
REFLECTIVE 4

I WOULD LIKE A MATHEMATICS TEACHER WHO WOULD

EXPLAIN MOST OF DETAILS AND LET ME TRY TO GET ON
WITH THE PROBLEM BY MYSELFONE WHO WOULD BE
STRICT, HELPFUL TO THE ONES WHO REALLY NEED HELP,
AND A KIND TEACHER WHO SHARES A JOKE INSTEAD
OF BEING ANGRY AT SOMEONE.
REFLECTIVE 5.

AS A WHOLE I THINK THERE ARE MORE GOOD

TEACHERS WHO DOES THEIR WORK PROPERLY
THAN BAD TEACHERS.
THANK YOU
FOR LISTENING.
