Course Objectives
To have a wider perspective of society, emphasizing the role of the professional engineer.
To understand the key economic and technology issues that affect the promotion and
improvement of industrial activity in Malaysia.
To support the development of skills, knowledge and qualities which are important as a
professional engineer in Malaysia and the global marketplace.
To have knowledge in the obligations, roles and professional conduct of an engineer stipulated
by the professional body in a modern society.
To have a basic awareness of the legal, environmental and socio-economic factors (economics,
ethics, etc.) which have a significant impact on society.
Programme Objectives
Programme Objectives: We aim to produce graduates who:
1. Are employable in the global engineering industry and other related fields of the built
environment.
2. Pursues post-graduate qualifications to satisfy a passion for research and life-long
learning.
3. Participates in continuous professional improvement leading to professional licensure.
Programme Outcomes
Programme Learning Outcomes:
As a graduates, you are able to demonstrate the following:
1. Engineering Knowledge Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering
fundamentals and an engineering specialisation to the solution of complex engineering
problems.
2. Problem Analysis Identify and analyse complex engineering problems, research literature
and formulate substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural
sciences and engineering sciences.
3. Design/Development of Solutions Design solutions for complex engineering problems and
design systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate
consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental
considerations.
4. Investigation Conduct investigation into complex problems using research based knowledge
and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data,
and synthesis of information to provide valid conclusions.

5. Modern Tool Usage Create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and
modern engineering and IT tools, including prediction and modelling, to complex
engineering activities, with an understanding of the limitations.
6. The Engineer and Society Apply reasoning informed by contextual knowledge to assess
societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant
to professional engineering practice.
7. Environment and Sustainability Understand the impact of professional engineering
solutions in societal and environmental contexts and demonstrate knowledge of and a need
for sustainable development.
8. Ethics Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and
norms of engineering practice.

9. Communication Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the
engineering community and with society at large, such as being able to comprehend and
write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give
and receive clear instructions.
10. Individual and Team Work Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader
in diverse teams and in multi-disciplinary settings.
11. Life-long Learning Recognise the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage
in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.
12. Project Management and Finance Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of
engineering and management principles and apply these to ones own work, as a member
and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.
Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students are expected to:
o Appreciate the impact of regulation in industry.
o Recognise and appreciate the socio-economic and basic technological issues relating to the
local industry.
o Recognise the impact of technology on the society, economy, and the politics globally.
o Appreciate the responsibilities of environmental protection and the duties of securing health
and safety in the workplace.
o Characterise and analyse the ethical issues and rules of conduct for the profession associated
with contemporary issues.
Expectation of lecturers in students
Be serious in their study.
Be punctual in all situations, ie. attend classes and to submit all assignments on time
Commit to work hard and to produce good quality work output.
Work well individually.
Work well with fellow group members in group work.
Interact with lecturer in class.
Ask questions in class when in doubt.
Dont delay resolution of all unsolved problems.
Improve themselves, especially in areas of known weaknesses.
Expectation of students in lecturers
