FIVE ALTERNATIVE RESPONSES TO CONFLICT

Avoiding or Dodging Conflict

Accommodating or Giving in to Conflict
Aggressive or Engaging in Conflict
Compromising or Negotiating Conflict
Collaboration or Using Teamwork
REASONS OF
CONFLICTS AND
THEIR SOLUTIONS
CHANGING CONFLICT CULTURES

Openness
Honesty
Dialogue
Conflict Resolution
Ability to Learn from the Opponent
THE LANGUAGE OF CONFLICT

After Stanley and Michael had a polite discussion the

language among these two evolved dynamically and
affected the organizational culture.
CONFLICT AS WAR OR OPPORTUNITY AND
JOURNEY

Michael treated his conflict with Stanley as a war

between the two which made the situation worse

Michael should have taken the conflict as an

opportunity and make the work environment more
friendly by resolving the issue
THE COST OF POOR COMMUNICATION

The employees and the manager shows distrust towards each

other
Conflict Audit can be carried out in the office for finding out
the reasons for this mistrust
Initiating a conversation among the coworkers to identify the
elements of effective communication should also be helpful.
CLEARING THE DECKS FOR LISTENING

Effective listening does not begin with listening but with the
listener clearing the decks and focusing his or her attention on
the person who is about to speak.
Stanley instead of just reading his book should have paid
attention to his boss.
Michael should rearrange his office environment which helps
employees to concentrate better.
SETTING THE STAGE FOR LISTENING

Conversations should not usually be held closed doors or at

managers offices as it may sometimes portend discipline or
rebuke threats to the employees.
Besides, the sitting arrangements inside the office of Michael or
the conference rooms clearly signifies a power distance which
should be avoided.
CREATING A COMMITMENT TO
COMMUNICATE

Michael has been seeming to be very insensitive while talking to

his subordinates
Michael failed to eliminate negative and ineffective
communication behavior which has been seen from Stanley
A practice should be developed where coworkers, family,
friends and colleagues can be treated as a support system
rather than an obstacle
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATIONS FOR
SPEAKER
Drawing other persons idea before speaking up himself
Discover and manage his listeners unspoken expectations
Speak respectfully, empathetically and responsively toward others
Make sure he states his interests rather than his positions
Give a hard try to develop solutions
Moreover, he should practice to complement people for listening to him
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION FOR
LISTENERS

Step One: Let go of your own ideas, roles, and agendas and try
to understand what the other person is saying.
Step Two: Search behind the words for the other persons
meaning, especially if he or she disagrees with you.
Step Three: Respond respectfully and non-defensively,
acknowledging and addressing the other persons concerns first.
ACTIVE, EMPATHETIC AND RESPONSIVE
LISTENING

Encourage one another for active participation

Clarifying the topics of discussion properly
Acknowledging any issue that is needed to be addressed
Agreeing upon others ideas when it is alright
Responding and providing feedback by active engagement
THANK YOU!
