Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause adverse change. Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such as noise, heat or light. Pollutants, the components of pollution, can be either foreign substances/energies or naturally occurring contaminants.
Environmental pollution is the discharge of material, in any
physical state, that is dangerous to the environment or human health. Most industrialized and developing countries, and many intergovernmental organizations, have developed maximum exposure values for pollutants. Many regulate atmospheric emissions to keep their levels compatible with environmental equilibrium and human health. Environmental pollution is defined as the undesirable change in physical, chemical and biological characteristics of our air, land and water. As a result of over- population, rapid industrializations, and other human activities like agriculture and deforestation etc., earth became loaded with diverse pollutants that were released as by-products.
Classification of Environmental Pollution Pollution can be broadly classified according to the
components of environment that are polluted. Major of these are: Air pollution, Water pollution, Soil pollution (land degradation) and Noise pollution. Details of these types of pollutions are discussed below with their prevention measures. (1) Air Pollution: Air is mainly a mixture of various gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen. These are present in a particular ratio. Whenever there is any imbalance in the ratio of these gases, air pollution is caused. The sources of air pollution can be grouped as under Natural; such as, forest fires, ash from smoking volcanoes, dust storm and decay of organic matters. Man-made due to population explosion, deforestation, urbanization and industrializations. Possible Solution; 1.Use public transportation. Riding the bus, train, or subway is another great way to avoid using your personal vehicle and reduce carbon emissions. If you have access to good public transportation where you live, take advantage of it. You will help reduce air pollution and you will get some exercise and fresh air in the process. 2.Reduce the use of chlorofluorocarbon products like refrigerator, aircon and burning garbage's that releases thick and black smoke that can cause the thinning of ozone layer. 3.Conserve water by turning off the tap when running water is not necessary. This helps prevent water shortages and reduces the amount of contaminated water that needs treatment. Recommendation: Conserve energy remember to turn off lights, computers, and electric appliances when not in use. Use energy efficient light bulbs and appliances. Participate in your local utility's energy conservation programs. Keep your automobile well tuned and maintained. Follow the manufacturers instructions on routine maintenance, such as changing the oil and filters, and checking tire pressure and wheel alignment.
