History
Invented by George Westinghouse on March
5, 1872.
Actuated by compressed air.
Before 1872 a piston like plate was used on the
train wheel for continuing the braking system.
3
After 1872 by using air braking system
bakers are used to brake the wheel.

What is a brake ??
A brake is a device which is to slow or stop the
motion of a machine.
What is Air Brake system ???
Brakes applied with the help of air pressure are
called Air Brakes and the system is called as Air
Brake System.
6
Air Brake Concept
Basically air brakes are used on heavy
vehicles.
There are two types of air braking
system.
1. Single pipe braking system.
2. Twin pipe braking system.

1.Single pipe braking system
Components
Main reservoir.
Compressor.
Driver brake valve.
Brake pipe.
Angle cocks.
Brake cylinder.
Auxiliary reservoir.
Brake block.
Triple valve.

Process involved in working:
Charging
Application
Release
Manual release

2.Twin pipe braking system
Fitted on most modern passenger stock
and many goods wagons.
Basically there are two pipes used on each
vehicle.

Conclusion
Due to its maximum effectiveness in terms of
performance, it is mostly preferred for high end
works like supercars, mining work etc.
