preposies ou de partculas adverbiais.

Prepositional verbs: o significado pode ser

deduzido das partes que o compem.

Phrasal verbs: o significado no pode ser

deduzido a partir do verbo e da partcula adverbial.

H verbos em ingls que se formam com partculas

que podem ser preposies ou advrbios. Esses
verbos so conhecidos como phrasal verbs, que
podem ser two-word verbs ou three-word verbs.

Examples:
A two-word verb: to put on (vestir-se)
A three-word verb: to put up with (tolerar)

Em alguns casos, a partcula pode ser separada

do verbo. Com a presena de um pronome, ela
ser, necessariamente, separada.

Examples:

Please turn on the lights.

Please turn the lights on.

Please turn them on.

H casos em que a partcula no pode ser

separada.

Examples:

I cant go out tonight.

I need to look after my little brother.

We cant say:
I need to look my little brother after.

VERBO + PREPOSIO
Quando um verbo com preposio for usado,
o substantivo ou pronome ser colocado
depois da preposio, exceto nas oraes
interrogativas (what are you looking at? )
ou relativas (This is the man I was talking
to.).

Examples:
Look at those children.
Look at them.

O significado do verbo com preposio

coincide, em muitos casos, com aquele do
verbo de forma isolado. Os verbos to pay e
to pay for significam pagar. A preposio
serve para introduzir o complemento, no
agrega nenhum significado novo ao verbo.

Examples:
A: How much did you pay for that skirt?
B: I paid 50 reais.

VERBO + PARTCULA ADVERBIAL

Pode acontecer, no entanto, de o verbo ter
seu sentido modificado pela presena da
partcula. Assim, to look significa olhar, mas
to look after significa cuidar de algum. To
bring significa trazer, mas to bring up
significa criar, educar uma criana.
Examples:
They brought up their children in a very
traditional way.

Quando um verbo no tem complemento, quer

dizer, no apresenta nenhuma variao em sua
estrutura, ento a partcula colocada sempre
depois do verbo.

Examples:
They didnt show up.
Please, come in.
Tickets are sold out.
A prisoner run away.

Ns frequentemente usamos verbos com as

seguintes palavras:

in on up away round over

about by out off down

back through along forward

Ns frequentemente usamos on / off / out / back

/ round etc., com verbos de movimento.
Examples:
The bus was full. We couldnt get on.

Sally is leaving tomorrow and coming back on

Saturday.

When I touched him on the shoulder, he

turned round.

Compare in e out:
In = into a room, a building, a car, etc.
Examples:
How did the thieves get in?
Ive got a new flat. Im moving in on Friday.
Da mesma forma voc pode dizer go in, come
in, walk in, break in etc.

Out = out of a room, building, a car, etc.

Examples:
He just stood up and walked out.
I had no key, so I was looked out.

Outros verbos + in:

drop in / call in = fazer uma visitinha

Example:
I dropped in to see Chris on my way home.

join in = participar (de algo)

Example:
Were playing a game. Why dont you join in?

plug in = ligar algo (a algo)

Example:
The fridge isnt working because you havent
plugged it in.
fill in = preencher algo
Example:
Please fill in the application form and send it
to us by 28 February.
Voc tambm pode dizer fill out a form.

Outros verbos + out:

eat out = comer em um restaurante, no em casa.
Example:
There wasnt anything to eat home, so we
decided to eat out.

leave out = omitir, no incluir.

Example:
In the sentence She said that she was ill, you can
leave out the word that.

drop out of college / university / a course / a race =

parar antes de ter completamente terminado.

Example:
Gary went to university but dropped out after a
year.

get out of something that you arranged to do =

evitar fazer.

Example:
I promised Id go to the wedding. I dont want to
go, but I cant get out of it now.

work out = fazer exerccios

Example:
Chris works out at the gym three times a week.

work out = desenvolver, progredir

Example:
Good luck for the future. I hope everything works out well
for you.

work something out = calcular, solucionar

Example:
345x76? I need to do this on paper. I cant work it out.

Vejamos agora alguns exemplos com ON e OFF.

Verbo + on = continuar fazendo algo.

drive on/ walk on/ play on = continuar

dirigindo, caminhando, jogando, etc.

Example:
Should we stop at this gas station or should
we drive on to the next one?

go on = continuar
Example:
The party went on until 4 oclock in the morning.

Keep on doing something = fazer continuadamente

ou repetidamente.

Example:
He keeps on criticising me. Im fed up with it!

Verbo + off
Finish something off = fazer a ltima parte
de algo.
Example:
A: Have you finished painting the kitchen?
B: Ill finish it off tomorrow.

Go off = explodir
Example:
A bomb went off in the center, but fortunately
nobody was hurt.

Show off = tentar impressionar as pessoas

com sua habilidade, seu conhecimento, etc.
Example:
Look at that boy on the bike riding with two hands.
Hes just showing off.

Tell somebody off = repreender algum, falar

zangado por ter feito algo errado.
Example:
Clares mother told her off for wearing dirty shoes
in the house.
