(1899-1961)

Hemingway was a short

story writer and
novelist.
He worked as an
ambulance driver
during World War I.
Most of his stories deal
with war and suffering.
He won the Pulitzer
Prize for his novel
The Old Man and the
Sea in 1952.
In 1954, he won the
Nobel Prize in
Literature.
He is known for his
style of writing called
the Iceberg Theory.
THE ICEBERG THEORY
It is also known
as the Theory
of Omission.
It is a fact that
only 1/8 of an
iceberg is above
water. 7/8 of
the iceberg is
below water.
THE ICEBERG THEORY
Similarly, the author
conveys less in his
story or novel. The
reader understands
most of it by going
beyond the text. So, the
hidden meaning in the
text is for the reader to
identify. This hidden
meaning is called the
subtext.
