A time of community because the ear is
the dominant sense organ. This is also
known as an acoustic era because the
senses of hearing, touch, taste, and smell
were far more strongly developed than the
ability to visualize. Also it is a time of
private detachment because the eye is the
dominant sense organ; also known as the
visual era. Turning sounds into visible
objects radically altered the symbolic
environment. Words were no longer alive
and immediate, they were able to read
over and over again. Hearing no longer
becomes trustworthy, seeing was
believing.
Newspapers,
Books and
Magazines
If you want to be exposed to new
vocabulary and new ideas, the places to
go are books, magazines and
newspapers. Television, video games,
and the sorts of Internet content that
students lean toward (for example, social
networking sites, music sites, and the
like) are for the most part unhelpful.
Researchers have painstakingly analyzed
the contents of the many ways that
students can spend their leisure time.
Books, newspapers, and magazines are
singularly helpful in introducing new ideas
and new vocabulary to students.
Radio, Television
and Film
From the 1920s through the end of World War II,
radio was a popular source of news and political
analysis and it was an important source of
information on developments in Europe and the
Pacific and in addition to giving people news and
information programming, television has allowed
Americans insight into the political process and
has actually become part of the process. The
Democratic and Republican national
conventions were televised for the first time in
1952. Films are cultural artifacts created by
specific cultures. They reflect those cultures,
and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be
an important art form, a source of popular
entertainment, and a powerful medium for
educatingor indoctrinatingcitizens. The
visual basis of film gives it a universal power of
communication.
Computer and
Internet
Many people use computers and the
Internet as a way of communicating with
the outside world. Others surf the Internet
to buy things while some people create
Web sites as part of their business.
Listen to the words below and consult a
dictionary if you need a definition. Write a
sample sentence for each word to learn
how it is used in context. You can use the
Internet to find sample sentences and
related information.
Smartphones and
Social Media
Today, when the number of people using
smartphones has skyrocketed, the
process of communication has gone to
an unprecedented level. The relation
between smartphones and social
networks has contributed to it, as well.
Although this heading is a bit hyperbolic,
in the future decades even less people
will be using desktop computers, on
account of further popularization of the
smartphone. In 2013, for instance, the
number of Americans surfing the net via
the smartphone has significantly risen.
Social media are defined by their ability
to bring people together provides too
broad a definition.
