Introduction
Bangalore resident Ramesh Babu, is a star in his own
league who runs the business of cutting and styling hair.
He is an ordinary businessman, with an extraordinary
wealth.
He is a billionaire and owns a rent-a-car fleet of 67
alternative cars.
At the moment his fleet consists of around 200 cars, vans
and mini-buses, including imported vehiclesa Rolls-
Royce Silver Ghost, Mercedes C, E and S class and BMW
5, 6 and 7 series. He has a fleet of imported Mercedes
vans and Toyota mini-buses.
Early life and struggle
Ramesh babus father was P Gopal, a barber in Bengaluru.
In 1979, Rameshs father died when he was 7 years old.
Sudden demise of his father created acute financial
instability in their family.
Ramesh Babus mother had to work as a cook to help feed
her children, get them a semblance of an education and
help them have a shot at life.
Since she couldnt run the barber shop, she rented it out
for Rs 5 a day.

They even had to skip a meal a day.
There was lot of mental confusion in him as to continue
with his studies or support his mother and the family
income.
He studied up to the pre-university level and obtained a
diploma in electronics. All this while, his fathers shop
was still being rented out for meagre amounts.
He then decided to run it himself and in 1989, he began
working at the salon that had first been established by his
grandfather.
Starting his own business of car-rental
In 1994, he decided to run his fathers shop which he later
named as Inner Space, but he always dreamt of owning a car.
In the year 1997 he purchased a Maruti Omni from his savings
and taking a loan.
He started renting it out. What began as a passion soon
translated into an enormously successful car-rental business.
In 2004, he got into the luxury car rental and self-drive
business after the government opened up the tourism sector.
Ramesh Tours and Travels hasnt looked back since.

His mother worked as a cook in Nandini akkas house and she
is the one who gave him the idea of car rental business and
taught him some basics of doing such a business.
The first company, he rented out was Intel, because Nandini
was working for Intel and helped him arrange everything.
By the end of 1990s, he was running a successful taxi operation
business by the name of Ramesh Tours and Travels.
He thought of getting into luxury cars but it was difficult for
him as smaller cars were more prominent at that time.
Till 2004, he had only about 4 to 5 cars with which he was
carrying out his business but finally got into luxury car rental
and self drive business.

Since 2004, there is no stopping for Ramesh and has
plenty of clients.
Many bollywood celebrities Amitabh Bachan, Aamir
Khan to SRK and many singers and musicians have been
driven around in his luxury cars.
What cars does he have?
His first car was a 38 Lakh Mercedes E-Class luxury
sedan. Right now, his fleet consists of around 200 cars,
vans and mini-buses, including imported vehiclesa
Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, Mercedes C, E and S class and
BMW 5, 6 and 7 series. He has a fleet of imported
Mercedes vans and Toyota mini-buses.
He took real risk and bought the expensive Rolls Royce
Ghost in 2011 for 4 crore INR.
He also owns a Suzuki Intruder high-end motorbike that is
worth Rs 16 lakh.
He charges 75000 INR a day for the Rolls Royce.
Day to Day Life Today
Ramesh still goes to his barber shop every day as he
doesnt want to lose touch with his roots. Every morning
at 6, I go to the garage to check on the business. Then, by
10.30 Im in office. And every evening, without fail, by
5.30 Im at our salon. There are also people who specially
come in to get haircuts from me. I have a loyal client base
from Kolkata and Mumbai as well, he says.
He always believe that work is worship and can never
forget his roots. Even today being such a rich man he cuts
the hair of his regular customers just for Rs.65.
