A granular soil has sat = 19 kN/m3, = 350. infinite slope has to be made of this material. If factor of safety of 1.3 is needed, determine safe slope angle: a. When slope is dry or submerged without seepage. b. If seepage occurs at and parallel to slope surface. If seepage occurs parallel to slope with water table at a depth of 1.5m, what is factor of safety available on a slip plane parallel to ground surface at a depth of 4m. Assume slope angle = 280 in this case.
a. When slope is dry or submerged without seepage = tan/tan = factor
of safety = 1.3. Hence, tan = tan/1.3 = 0.7/1.3 = .538, so = 28deg.
b. If seepage occurs at and parallel to ground surface, factor of safety =
tan/sattan, so, 1.3 = (19-9.8)tan35/19tan. From this, tan = 0.26 and = 14.6deg.

If seepage occurs parallel to slope with water table at a depth of 1.5m, factor of safety available on a slip plane parallel to ground surface at a depth of 4m = (1-wh/satz)tan/tan h = 4-1.5 = 2.5m. Factor of safety = (1-9.8*2.5/19*4)tan35/tan28 = 0.8923
7. A proposed cutting in homogeneous cohesive soil will have slope
angle 25deg and will be 8m deep. Using stability chart, determine factor of safety against shear failure for: a. cu = 45kN/m2, u = 0, = 19kN/m3, D is large. b. cu = 45kN/m2, u = 0, = 19kN/m3, cohesive layer overlies a hard shale layer present at 12m depth c. cu = 25kN/m2, u = 15deg, = 18.5kN/m3
a. It is base failure condition. From stability chart, for large D, stability
number = 0.181 = cu /FcH = 45/Fc*19*8, so, Fc = 1.64. it is factor of safety against shear failure also.

b. It is also base failure condition. From stability chart, for D = 12/8 = 1.5, stability number = 0.157 = cu /FcH = 45/Fc*19*8, so, Fc = 1.89. it is factor of safety against shear failure also.
c. It is toe failure. Assume, F = 2, tanm = tanu/2 = tan15/2 = 0.134, so
m = 7.6deg. For this and slope angle = 25deg., from stability chart, stability no. = 0.068 = cu /FcH = 25/Fc*18.5*8, so, Fc = 2.48. it is not correct as Fc and F are not equal. Assume F = 2.1, so m = 7.3deg. For this and slope angle = 25deg., from stability chart, stability no. = 0.08 = cu /FcH = 25/Fc*18.5*8, so, Fc = 2.1. as both factor of safety is equal, it is also factor of safety against shear failure = 2.1.
