Trematodes are flatworms known as
flukes. They are internal parasites of mollusks
and vertebrates.
Eggs are passed in the feces, acquired by
the intermediate host(snails, vegetation) where
it undergoes into several stages, metacercariae
is the infective stage where definitive hosts
aquire through ingestion of IH having
metacercariae. They encysts in DH until adult
and lay eggs which eventually passed on feces.

1. Collect 2 spp. Of flukes as specimen for you to
work on. Preserve using 75 % alcohol.
2. SOP: wear your laboratory gear
3. Describe your specimen externally (size, shape,
color).
4. View your specimen under microscope. Note the
suckers, and distinct features.
5. Dry the specimen.
6. Place on a glass slide and view under compound
microscope. Note the parts.
7. Identify your specimen.

Parasitic flatworm which cause fasciolopsis.
One of the most important single platyhelminth
infections of ruminants in Asia and Africa.
Humans may also be infected
Metacercariae = infective stage
Infection with fasciola spp. Occurs when
metacercariae are accidentally ingested on raw
vegetation.

Fishoederious elongatus

most common spp. Of amphistomes (having

two suckerson both extremities) affecting
cattle and carabao in the Philippines.
Found in the rumen
Animals infected with this parasite do not
show obvious symptoms, so t is easy to be
ignored.
However, studies show that it cause severe
economic losses to the breeding industry.
