Social Justice Connection
The term child rearing simply means the way a child is raised or the process of
how a child is raised.

For this assignment we are going to focus on parental involvement and how it
affects the success of a student.

Parental involvement can be noted as a social justice issue is because parents

who are not actively involved in their childs education can negatively affect how
a student behaves and performs academically.

There are multiple reasons why there is a lack of participation from parents, and
as a result there is major disconnect between parents and their child, as well as
teachers and their students.
Social Justice Connection

The success of a student is in direct correlation to the parents involvement no

matter if its academically or behaviorally.

According to mentor teacher, Ms. Andrews, she has noticed a difference between
parents who are involved in their child's education versus parents who are not.

Students who perform well have parents who are active in the school
community.

They come to every parent teachers conference, monthly family nights and
are in constant communication with the teachers..
Parent Involvement in School
Attending PTCs:

UPrep had a successful turnout for parent teacher conferences. They even had to
turn away parents. Of the parents who came, only 50% of the struggling students
had parents show up says Mr. Robinson.

UPrep also has assemblies that allow parents to come in and see what their kids are
learning. Parental attendance has not been meeting the teacher's expectations.

Parents at UPrep are not offered volunteering opportunities at the school. Rolls of
cafeteria aid or recess monitor are staffed positions or teachers monitor.

In-class help:
I had a parent come everyday, from 8am until dismissal, said Mrs. Weaver.

Sometimes parents dont appear until their child is at risk of academic failure.
Parental Involvement at Home
Completing HW with kids:

Parental involvement and support in education has been shown to be a key factor
of educational achievement.

When parents help their children with homework, this is an important way of
building their children's confidence, abilities and respect for school and education.

According to educational psychology, there are two factors that increase a childs
motivation: self-efficacy and a model.

Signing off on homework:

I stamp students planners as form of communication, and a way to teach students

how to be accountable as well as responsible, Mrs. Weaver said. I do it show parents
their childs ability to be consistent with a daily routine, which could help them with
managing future routines in their lives.
Alternative Factors of Parental
Involvement

Parents Level of Education:

Research shows that higher levels of parent educational attainment are

strongly associated with positive outcomes for children in many areas,
including school readiness and educational achievement.

An uneducated parent or guardian can be a barrier to parental

involvement within their childrens academics in regards to forming an
understanding on how to present assistance to their children.

Counter-Argument: Children want to know that their parents support

them.
Relevance in
UPrep
ITS RELEVANT EVERYWHERE.

I believe a child who is only educated by

teachers arent truly educated at all, said Mrs.
Weaver.

There is a direct correlation between parents

who are less involved or not involved at all with
students who perform poorly academically and
behaviorally, said Ms. Andrews.

Mr. Robinson wants more parents to come to

the parent teacher conferences.
Relevance to the Communities
Served by Ellen Thompson?
HOW DOES IT POSITIVELY AFFECT THE COMMUNITY:
How can being involved in education make a community stronger?

A school can be a community center. If schools receive support they can offer more
resources. For example, a school in my home district offers parenting classes; the
teachers and students parents, and students from the districts high school volunteer
for child care services.

HOW DOES IT NEGATIVELY AFFECT THE COMMUNITY:

How does the community have an impact on school?

How much children learn depends in good measure on the attitudes and values of the
surrounding community
Future Changes
What can teachers do?
Teachers should track parents down.

Teachers should send home progress reports home often.

Teachers should have an open door policy.

What can schools do?

Host services and events that brings parents to the school.

Publicize volunteer opportunities and student involvement.

Support parents in helping their children at home.

What can the community do?

Coordinate remediation and homework sessions for students in neighborhoods
within the schools boundaries.
REFLECTION

As our presentation comes to an end, I hope you have all enjoyed

this mini seminar. Our goal was to emphasize the importance of
parental involvement within a childs education. It is crucial that
we understand the impacts this topic has, and how to promote, or
increase this matter in our childrens lives.

Children want to know their parents support them at all

times!
