Our Problem
1. Parents Involvement Directly in School
a. In-class help
b. Going to PTCs
c. Cafeteria/Volunteering
For this assignment we are going to focus on parental involvement and how it
affects the success of a student.
There are multiple reasons why there is a lack of participation from parents, and
as a result there is major disconnect between parents and their child, as well as
teachers and their students.
Social Justice Connection
According to mentor teacher, Ms. Andrews, she has noticed a difference between
parents who are involved in their child's education versus parents who are not.
Students who perform well have parents who are active in the school
community.
They come to every parent teachers conference, monthly family nights and
are in constant communication with the teachers..
Parent Involvement in School
Attending PTCs:
UPrep had a successful turnout for parent teacher conferences. They even had to
turn away parents. Of the parents who came, only 50% of the struggling students
had parents show up says Mr. Robinson.
UPrep also has assemblies that allow parents to come in and see what their kids are
learning. Parental attendance has not been meeting the teacher's expectations.
Parents at UPrep are not offered volunteering opportunities at the school. Rolls of
cafeteria aid or recess monitor are staffed positions or teachers monitor.
In-class help:
I had a parent come everyday, from 8am until dismissal, said Mrs. Weaver.
Sometimes parents dont appear until their child is at risk of academic failure.
Parental Involvement at Home
Completing HW with kids:
Parental involvement and support in education has been shown to be a key factor
of educational achievement.
When parents help their children with homework, this is an important way of
building their children's confidence, abilities and respect for school and education.
According to educational psychology, there are two factors that increase a childs
motivation: self-efficacy and a model.
A school can be a community center. If schools receive support they can offer more
resources. For example, a school in my home district offers parenting classes; the
teachers and students parents, and students from the districts high school volunteer
for child care services.
How much children learn depends in good measure on the attitudes and values of the
surrounding community
Future Changes
What can teachers do?
Teachers should track parents down.
