LIQUEURS

Liqueurs
A Liqueur is a sweet alcoholic beverage that have been
flavored with fruit, herb, nuts, spices, flowers or cream.
These are typically quite sweet, they are usually not aged
for long but may have resting period during their
production to allow flavors to marry.
The word liqueur comes from the latin word Liquifacere
meaning to dissolve and refers to the dissolving of
flavourings in the spirits.

Popular Liqueurs:
Advacaat Dutch liqueur made with egg yolks, sugar, and
brandy.
Amaretto almond liqueur from Italy.
Anissette a clear liqueur made from anise seed and
flavored with bitter almonds.
Apricot liqueur flavored with apricots.
Aqauvit clear liqueur flavored with caraway seeds from
Scandinavian countries.
Benedictine sweet liqueur flavored with secret blend of
herbs and medical plants.
Blue curacao orange-flavored liqueur with blue coloring.
Chambord brand of black raspberry liqueur.
Chartreuse liqueur containing more than 130 herbs and
spices made by Carthusian monks near Grenoble, France.
There is green and yellow Chartreuse; the green is heavier
with higher proof. Chartreuse can be served as a digestif
or used as flavoring.
Coffee Liqueur is a liqueur flavored with coffee.
Cointreau orange flavored liqueur, a brand of curacao. It
is produced out of triple sec and orange curacao.
Creme de banane banana liqueur.
Creme de cacao is made from cacao beans, spices and
vanilla. It comes in two colors white and brown.
Creme de menthe peppermint liqueur, available in green
or white (colorless).
Drambuie Scottish based on whisky and flavored with
herbs and honey.
Galliano Italian herb flavored with over 40 herbs, flowers,
and spices, including aniseed, vanilla and honey.
Grand Marnier orange- flavored liqueur which has Cognac
as its base spirit.
Irish cream Liqueur is a liqueur made with cream, Irish
whiskey and sweeteners.
Kahlua Mexican liqueur made from coffee bean, vanilla,
and brandy.
Kirsch fruit brandy made from black cherries.
Midori Japanese bright green liqueur made from melon.
Pernod spirit flavored with star anise, giving it a licorice
flavor.
Schnapps originally a Scandinavian spirit made from grain
or potato; now used as a name for fruit liqueurs including
peach, appple, cinnamon and other flavors.
Southern Comfort bourbon-based liqueur flavored with
peach.
Tia Maria is a brand of coffee liqueur from Jamiaca.
Triple sec liqueur flavored with sweet and bitter orange
peel.
Bitters

They tend to be flavoured with herbs, roots, and


botanicals, contain lower quantities of fruit and
sugar than liqueurs. They are believed to be a good
remedy for indigestion and hangover. These maybe
served as added flavor to a cocktail or as a straight
beverage.
Angostura bitters have become indispensable in the making of
a proper Pink Gin, Old Fashioned, or as they are best known to
enhance: the Manhattan. Angostura bitters is a unique
combination of tropical herbs and spices that produces a strong
flavour and as a result is best added by the drop or dash.

Campari - This bitter aperitif with its distinctive brilliant red


colour and pungent quinine flavour has seemingly become the
national drink of Italy. It is frequently drunk with soda or tonic
water and is an essential ingredient for several cocktails such
as the Negroni and the Americano.
Syrups

Is a thick liquid consisting primarily of


a solution of sugar in water, containing a large
amount of dissolved sugars but showing little
tendency to deposit crystals.

Simple Syrup a basic water and sugar syrup used to


make drinks at bars. It is made by dissolving equal
amount of hot water and sugar (ratio 1:1).

Grenadine a strong, blood-red syrup made from


pomegranates. It is used as sweetener and contains
no alcohol.
Chocolate syrup is a chocolate flavored condiment. It is
often used as a topping for various desserts, such as ice
cream, or mixed with milk to make chocolate milk.

Flavoured syrups are made by adding flavouring


matter to a simple syrup. For instance, syrupus
aromaticus is prepared by adding certain quantities
of orange flavouring and cinnamon water to simple
syrup.
Honey is a sweet food made by bees
using nectar from flowers
