Introduction

Smiling Minds, is a free meditation App. for all ages. Educators can use this program in the classroom or a quiet area and
it fits into UDL framework as well, providing all students with the benefits of meditation. Meditation assists in developing
emotional resilience and enhances creativity, preparing them for a work mindset. A coping strategy, for those with anxiety,
ADHD and other exceptionalities needing a break from work, stress or class noise.

Raz Kids is a software used for language arts in the classroom for students needing extra assistance with reading, fluency
and comprehension. Students listen to books reading along earning points as they move up in levels to buy items to create
an imaginary play room making it a fun, engaging game for elementary and especially ELL learners. Teachers monitor and
track progress.

The integration of Indigenous culture and tradition in classrooms fosters an appreciation for the cultural aspects of
Canadas First Nations for all students and will help Indigenous students feel a greater sense of comfort and belonging. This
talking circle exercise will give students the chance to share any connections made with their own family traditions as well.
This lesson teaches young children valuable communication skills, learning the importance of waiting your turn to speak, not
interrupting others while speaking, as only those holding the talking stick can speak.

Talking Circle Lesson Plan

The grade 2 class is studying early First Nations of Canada in Social Studies. Today, they have
taken a field trip to Heritage Park where they hung out at the Fur Trading Post, with an actor
playing a Metis fur trader, to learn about how a fur post operated then they cooked traditional
Indigenous bannock enjoying it warming up at the fire.

Now after returning to class, they will sit in a talking circle on the carpet and watch a short video
of a grade 1 talking stick lesson.

One by one students speak while holding a large feather, symbolizing our Indigenous talking
stick, about a connection they have made maybe about a cultural family food dish or special
activity at home or just what they learned from visiting the fur trading post.

This lesson assist students express themselves building on their communication, listening skills
and patience to not interrupt others when they are speaking as each student can only talk when
holding the feather.
