 Diversion headwork
It is a structure constructed across a river to raise the level of water so that it can
be divided into the off taking canals.
 Components of Diversion headwork

1. Weir

4. Fish ladder
5. Canal head regulator
6. Silt excluder , silt ejector
7. River training works: guide banks,
marginal bunds
 Weir
1. Raised concrete or masonary crest wall constructed across the river
width with or without the shutter on its top
 Types of weir
 Based on flood design criteria
• Gravity weir
-uplift pressure caused by head of water seeping below the weir can be
balanced by the weight of the weir
• Non gravity weir
-Weir floor is designed continuous with the divide piers as reinforced
structure such that weight of concrete slab together with weight of divide
pier keeps the structure safe against uplift pressure
 Based on material used
• Masonary weir with vertical drop
-suitable for hard clay and consolidated gravel foundation
• Rock fill weir with sloping apron
-suitable for sandy foundation
• Concrete weir with sloping glacis
-Suitable for permeable foundation
 Under sluices
• Provided to maintain well maintained river channel near canal head
regulator
• Scour away silt deposited in front of head regulator
 Divide Wall
• Masonry or a concrete wall constructed at right angle to the axis of weir
• Separate the weir proper from under sluices
• Prevent cross current and flow parallel to the weir
 Fish ladder
• Constructed for the easy movement of fish from u/s to d/s and vice-versa
 Canal Head Regulator
• Provided at the head of each main canal off taking from diversion
headwork
• Regulates the supply of water into canal
• Controls entry of silt into canal
 Silt excluder
• Constructed in bed of river ,u/s of head regulator
• Prevents the entry of silt to canal
 Silt ejector
• Extracts silt water from canal water
• Constrcted on the bed of canal and a little distance downstream from the
head regulator

Guide banks and Marginal bunds

• They are required near weir site in order to ensure smooth and axial flow
of water and to prevent the flow of river from outflanking the works due
to change in its course
