PRESTRESSED

CONCRETE DESIGN
Plate No.1
Problem 1
A double cantilever beam is to be designed so that its
prestress will balance a total uniform load of 23.350 kN/m
on the beam. Design the beam using the least amount of
prestress, assuming that the centroid of the steel must
have a concrete protection of a at least 75 mm. If a
concentrated load P = 62.275 kN is added at midspan,
compute the maximum fiber stresses at midspan.
Problem 1
Problem 2
A simply supported prestressed concrete beam, 9.146 m
long, carries a uniform load of 58 kN/m, including its own
weight, and two equal concentrated loads of 110 kN at its
third points, as shown. If an effective prestress of 1250 kN
is produced on a tendon located 0.15 m from the bottom of
the beam, calculate the fiber stresses of the beam at the
point of maximum moment. Use Internal couple method.
Problem 2
Problem 3
An AASHTO prestressed simply supported I beam has a
span of 10 m and is 900 mm deep. Its cross-section is
shown below and subjected to a live-load intensity WL = 53
kN/m and is prestressed with 12-12mm dia. seven wire
stress-relieved strands to resist the applied gravity load and
the self-weight of the beam, assuming the tendon
eccentricity at midspan,
e = 330 mm. Maximum permissible stresses are as follows:
f ’c = 41.40 MPa, fpe = 1000 MPa.
Calculate the fiber stresses of the beam at the point of
maximum moment. Use Internal couple method.
Problem 3
Problem 4
A rectangular concrete beam of cross-section 30 cm deep
and 20 cm wide is prestressed by means of 15 wires of 5
mm diameter located 6.5 cm from the bottom of the beam
and 3 wires of diameter of 5 mm, 2.5 cm from the top.
Assuming the prestress in the steel as 840 N/mm2,
calculate the stresses at the extreme fibers of the mid-span
section when the beam is supporting its own weight over a
span of 6 m. If a uniformly distributed live load of 6kN/m is
imposed, evaluate the maximum working stress in
concrete. The density of concrete is 24kN/m3.
Problem 5
A concrete beam with a single overhang is simply
supported at A & B over a span of 8 m & the overhang BC
is 2 m. The beam is of rectangular section 300 mm wide
800 mm deep & supports a uniformly distributed live load of
3.52 kN/m over the entire length in addition to its self-
weight. Determine the profile of the prestressing cable with
an effective force of 450 kN which can balance the dead &
live loads on the beam. Sketch the profile of the cable
along the length of the beam.
Problem 6
A tendon 80 ft (24.4 m) long is tensioned along a circular
curve with R = 102 ft (31.1 m) as shown in the figure. For a
unit stress of 1241 Mpa applied at the jacking end, a total
elongation of 122 mm is obtained. Es = 207 kN/mm².
compute the stress f2 at the far end of the tendon.
