True/False tests
True False Test
Introduction
 Alternative choice test in which the
respondent indicates whether each of
several statements is True or False.
 It is also called binary choice question,
because it is required to mark either True
or False.
What happens:
 Respondent Analyzes a statement
 Assess whether true or false
 Marks an answer (True or False)
Nature
 Measures the ability to identify whether
statements of fact are correct
 Contains two possible responses for each
item
 Requires students to select a response
 Tests student’s recall and comprehension
Advantages
 Quick and easy to score
 Objectivity in scoring
 Can cover lots of content areas on a
single exam
 If constructed well, can be highly reliable
in assessing student knowledge
 Language and hand writing is not affected
Disadvantages
 Difficult to construct and administer
 It may lead students to word for word
memorization
 Encourage guessing, and reward for
correct guesses
 Easy to cheat
Disadvantages (Continue)
 It is difficult to discriminate between
students that know the material and
students who do not
 Not measure higher mental abilities
(like creativity, organizing power,)
Principles /Suggestions for
writing True/False
1. Use clear and simple language
2. Avoid negative statements—
double negative
e.g., Pakistan is not un-Islamic
Country (True/False).
3. Use balance number of true and
false items
4. It should be absolutely true or false
e.g. Islamabad is the capital of
Pakistan and it is situated in the
province of Sindh (T/F)
5. Avoid specific words such as
All, None, Always, Never → False
& Some, Often → True

6. Avoid tricky statements e.g.,

Pakistan Came into being on 14
August 1947 B.C. (T/F)
7. Arrange true and false items
randomly, not in any specific order.
8. Avoid lifting exact wording from
the textbook.
9. Use only one central idea in each
item.
