Exercise 5: Evaluating angles not on the unit
circle!
• 1st- determine the quadrant of your angle.
CONVERT to degrees if in radians. (recall your
special case triangles)
• Sketch the angle in the quadrant, and form a
right triangle by dropping a hypotenuse.
• 2nd determine the reference angle for the
given angle and corresponding coordinates.
• Label the sides accordingly and/or solve for
the unknown if necessary.

Exercise 6: TAKE NOTES
To find the value of a trig function of any angle:
1. Find the trig value for the associated
reference angle.
2. Pick the correct sign depending on where the
terminal side lies.
.

1. Find the reference angle 1st if

the given is not on the unit ref   180  135
circle.
 45
2. Next, determine the trig tan 45  1
value of the reference angle.

3. Then determine the quadrant

of your given angle. 135  QII

4. Finally, determine the sign of

your angle—based on the tan is (-)in QII
quadrant of the given because cos = (-) and sin = (+)
(original) angle
tan135  1 13
Exercise 6 continued- FOLLOW THE
STEPS FROM PREVIOUS SLIDE AND
COMPLETE 1-3.
Evaluate:
1.sin 5π/3

2.cos (−60°)

3.tan 11π/6
Exercise 7: REVIEW AND COPY
Trigonometric Functions of Real Numbers
• For convenience, the following table shows the exact values of
the trigonometric functions of special angles and quadrant
angles.

Trigonometric Values of Common Angles

EXERCISE 7.1 Trigonometric Functions of Nonacute Angles

• Example 1

• Solution:
• a. Because  = 4 /3 lies in Quadrant III, the
reference angle is   = (4 /3) –  =  /3,
as shown in Figure 4.40.

• Moreover, the cosine is negative in

Quadrant III, so

Figure 4.40
Example EXERCISE 7.2
cont’d
tan = (–210)
. Because –210  + 360  = 150 , it follows that –210  is
coterminal with the second-quadrant angle 150 .
Therefore, the reference angle is   = 180  – 150  = 30 ,
as shown in Figure 4.41.

• Finally, because the tangent is
negative in Quadrant II, you have.

Figure 4.41
Exercise 7.3 – csc (11 /4) cont’d

• Because (11 /4) – 2 = 3 /4, it follows that 11 /4 is

coterminal with the second-quadrant angle 3/4.
Therefore, the reference angle is   =  – (3 /4) =  /4,
as shown in Figure 4.42.

• Because the cosecant is positive

in Quadrant II, you have

EXERCISE 8:
Your task: Evaluate, if possible, the six trigonometric functions of
the real number theta. Give in ratio form, no decimals.
TURN IN EXERCISE 8 ONLY!

1. Θ = 7π/4 (ex. Cos, sin, tan, cot, sec, csc)

2. Θ = -2π/3
3. Θ = 6π
4. Θ = 17π/6
