SIMPLE SENTENCE

 Simple sentence is also called an independent clause.


 It contains a subject and a verb (in a predicate)
 It expresses a complete thought.

 It contains two independent clauses joined by a


coordinator.
 Coordinators: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. (‘FANBOYS’)

COMPLEX SENTENCE

 It has an independent clause joined by one or more


dependent clauses.
 It always has a subordinator such as because, since,
after, although, or when or a relative pronoun such as
that, who, or which.
 When a complex sentence begins with a subordinator,
comma is required at the end of the dependent clause.
Example: After they finished studying, Juan and Maria
went to the movie.
 When the independent clause begins the sentence with
subordinators in the middle, no comma is required.
Example: I am glad that you are feeling better.
Study these sample sentences:

1. When he handed in his homework, he forgot to give


the teacher the last page.
2. The teacher returned the homework after she
noticed the error.
3. The students are studying because they have a test
tomorrow.
4. After they had dinner, Clark and Josephine washed
the dishes.
5. The woman who called my mom sells cosmetics.
6. The town where I grew up is in the United States.
7. It is ashamed that she has resigned from her job.
