How does noise affect

coordination?

By Nicole Bratu p.2

Hypothesis
If there is no music playing in the background, then people will thread the needle
faster.
Research
Noise-a sound, especially one that is loud or unpleasant or that causes disturbance.

Coordination-the ability to use different parts of the body together smoothly and
efficiently

There have been studies done where they saw that noise significantly reduces
human performance.

They found that even if music is soothing to the body, it distracts your brain from
what you are suppose to be doing.
Research Continued
“Sound is converted to an electrical signal when it enters the ear. This signal travels
up the auditory nerve to the part of the brain that processes sound, the auditory
cortex. From there, the signals travel throughout the brain, creating a variety of
responses.”

The Auditory and Prefrontal Cortex are used for hearing.

Plan the Experiment
● 10 test subjects
● A room
● Some kind of noise or music
● Needle
● Thread

1. Recruit 10 people.
2. Have five people go in a room that is quiet.
3. Have them put a thread through the needle.
4. Record how much time it takes.
5. Have five people in a room.
6. Have music playing.
7. Have them put a thread through a needle.
8. Record how much time it takes.
9. Analyze the data and make a chart.
Experiment
Quiet Room: Loud Room:
4 out of 5 people got a time of under 3 2 out of 5 people got a time of under 3
minutes minutes

#1- 4 minutes, 27 seconds #1- 2 minutes, 36 seconds

#2- 3 minutes, 23 seconds
#2- 2 minutes, 44 seconds #3- 4 minutes, 5 seconds
#3- 2 minutes, 12 seconds #4- 2 minutes, 51 seconds
#4- 1 minute, 57 seconds #5- 3 minutes, 47 seconds
#5- 2 minutes, 39 seconds
Graph
The average time of
threading a needle
without music was 2
minutes and 44 seconds.
The average time of
threading a needle with
music was 3 minutes and
33 seconds.
Conclusion
In the end, the room that was quiet was more successful. Because the brain has more
going on, when there is also music playing it is more distracted. Therefore, it takes
more time to put the thread through the needle.
