METHODOLOGY OF NNS 2013

ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS
NNS SAMPLING DESIGN

The statistical design used was a multi-staged stratified sampling design.

 The first stage of the sampling was the selection of the Primary Sampling Unit ( PSU)
which consisted of one barangay or a contiguous barangay with at least 500
households.
 The second stage was the selection of the enumeration area( EA) which consisted of
a contiguous area in a barangay with 150-200 households and
 The third stage was the selection of the household in a sampled EA that served as
the ultimate sampling unit. The samples were taken separately from the regions by
urban and rural stratum.
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES

Anthropometry is a key component of the assessment of the nutritional status in

children and adults ( Simko and Cowell, 1995). Anthropometric data can reflect general
health and nutritional status, predicts performance, health and survial and is used to
track trends in the growth and development over time.
SAMPLING AND SELECTION

About 35, 825 sample households were selected for the survey. The sampling used
here cross sectional, multi-stage stratified sampling design, with a total of 33,852
participants. It includes infants, children, adolescents, adults, pregnant women and
lactating women.

DIETARY METHOD
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES

The dietary component collects data to measure food and nutrient intakes at the
household and individual levels. It provides information on the quantities of food
consumed, the nutritive value of the diet and the adequacy of the intake.
It is considered an indirect method of assessing the nutritional status of the
population.
SAMPLING AND SELECTION

100% of the households were included in food weighing while 1 day 24-
hr food recall were obtained from 50% of the these HH. The other 2 day
24-hr food recall were obtained from the other 50% of the HH.

2. Food Composition library – estimates the energy and nutrient intake from food
consumed
