The fibre optic advantage

Turning a fibre optic cable into a sensing medium takes a very simple
idea and turns it into a powerful tool

• No power or electronics are required in the field

• High reliability and low maintenance

• Consistent over very long distances

• Real time sensing performance

• Intrinsically safe – immune to EMI, RFI and

lightning

• Use existing fibre optic infrastructure

• Extremely cost-effective security solution

• Proven technology and proven performance

Principle of operation

Passive Start
Junction

Sensing Controller

Fibre optic sensing cable Passive Terminator

Inactive lead-
in cable

• A fibre optic cable is used as the sensor

• A laser light is sent down the fibre
• When any motion or vibration acts on the fibre, or anything the fibre is
attached to or buried in, the light wave is affected
• This change of light is detected by the controller and the event is classified
using patented FFT technology

©Future Fibre Technologies 2013 7

FFT products

• FFT provides a family of fibre optic intrusion detection solutions, delivering the
complete range of end-to-end PIDS, pipeline protection, and network security solutions

• Ability to deliver a system for the smallest to the most complex and demanding sites

• FFT systems are built around a number of advanced features that:

• Deliver high reliability with low maintenance

• Operate over long distances - up to 80km or 50

miles of sensor cable with a single system

• Pinpoint the location of an event or intrusion to as

close as 6 metres (20 feet)

• Have high detection rates (POD)

• Have low nuisance alarms (NAR)

©Future Fibre Technologies 2013 8

Signal discrimination

FFT’s uses proprietary technology to deliver high sensitivity to

intrusions without the penalty of nuisance alarms including:

• Intelligent event classification to process the signals, identifying and

eliminating nuisance alarms due to environmental noise such as
rain, wind, aircraft, traffic etc. while simultaneously maintaining the
same high levels of sensitivity.

• Advanced multi-parameter signal analysis to improve intrusion event

signal discrimination by clearly
indentifying what is a ‘real’ event and
what is a nuisance alarm

Case Study – deployed at a solar
power plant

FFT Secure Zone was selected to protect the perimeter of a 10-acre

solar power plant in the USA that generates about 2.4 million kilowatt-
hours (kWh) of clean, renewable energy a year.

The plant features 4,620 sun-tracking solar panels, each worth

thousands of dollars. The risk of theft or damage to these panels was
very real.

• A highly reliable zone-based perimeter intrusion

detection system was required to protect this site.

• Able to tolerate extreme UV levels, high temperatures

• Unaffected by the strong electromagnetic fields present

©Future Fibre Technologies 2013 27

Case Study – Deployed at a solar
power plant
After evaluating a range of technologies, the reasons
the client settled on the FFT Secure Zone system:

• High reliability and proven tolerance to extreme UV levels,

high temperatures, and harsh conditions

• Fibre optic based, so is unaffected by the strong

electromagnetic fields present

• Ease of installation and maintenance

• Minimal nuisance alarms

• FFT’s local support capability.

Case Study – installed at a 250km
Middle-East perimeter

This sensitive Middle East installation protects a perimeter fence

in excess of 250km long that runs through some of the toughest
desert conditions imaginable.

• A system was required to detect and provide the precise location of

intruders without generating false alarms from the high desert winds
experienced in this region.

• It had to be easy to install, reliable, with no ongoing

maintenance

• Due to the remoteness of the site,

there was never the option of
providing power on the fence line.

©Future Fibre Technologies 2013 40

Secure Fence™ case study
After evaluating many proposals, the client selected FFT
Secure Fence™ because:

• Only seven controllers were required to protect the entire

250km boundary.

• Installation was simple and cost-effective as no power or

controllers were required to be installed on the fence.

• FFT Secure Fence™ delivers the exact GPS co-ordinates of

an intrusion attempt

• The advanced signal processing reduced nuisance alarms

without compromising detection sensitivity.

• Support and training was provided by FFT’s local office

©Future Fibre Technologies 2013 41

Secure Fence™ - deployed at military
airbase to protect fighter aircraft

FFT Secure Fence was recently selected to provide the perimeter

protection of fighter aircraft and equipment at a sensitive military
airbase in Asia-Pacific.
• Protects the perimeter fence which is in excess of 7,000 meters or
23,000 feet long by detecting all unauthorised intrusions.
• Provides the precise location of intrusions so that CCTV
can be used for verification
• A proven history of operating reliably at military
airports in a range of harsh weather conditions
• No trenching permitted below
runways or taxiways

©Future Fibre Technologies 2013 42

After reviewing all proposals, the client selected FFT Secure
Fence™ due to:

• Its high detection performance

• The ability to provide the precise location of an intrusion

• Discrimination of nuisance alarms without compromising

sensitivity

• A proven history of military airports around the world

• Protects the entire airfield perimeter with just one

FFT Secure Fence™ system

• No need for power and controllers installed in the field - unlike

the alternative solutions proposed.
