BIOLOGY:

THE SCIENCE OF LIFE

Prepared by: Mrs. Ethel O. Cueto, RND

Biology

• It is a natural science that studies living

things; their structure, functions,
reproduction, life processes and
interactions with the environment
Why study BIOLOGY??....
It is because, BIOLOGY….
-provides basic information about living forms
and the processes life undergoes in the natural realm
- may enhance one’s understanding about his
environment and the interrelationships among living
organisms with their environment
-improves quality of human life
- may help you fund out interesting careers in
medicine, biochemistry, applied biology, teaching or
research
The Scientific Method
• Draw conclusions based
Inductive on a number of
observations
Reasoning • Moves from specific to
general

Deductive • Draws specific conclusions

from larger assumption
Reasoning • Moves from general to
specific
The Scientific Method

Is a logical sequence of thought,

processes and activities designed
to gather information and test
ideas
The Scientific Method: Steps

Define or State a Formulate

Problem/Question Hypotheses

Generalization
The Scientific Method
Theory
- hypothesis that is continually
supported by experimental evidences
• VS

Law
- theory that is consistently supported
by more and more evidences and
explanation became irrefutable
