Introduction
Microbial pathogens cause an estimate of 50 million
annual food borne human illness.
Salmonella is the leading cause of food borne illness,
found on fresh produce and in animal hosts, such as ch
icken and beef.
Different methods are used to detect this food borne
pathogens.
Introduction
Introduction
Methods like PCR and ELISA are very sensitive but it
require
Pure samples
Lengthy processing times
Expertise in molecular biology
Quite expensive
Conventional bacteriological culturing methods requires
72 hours for positive detection.
So an alternate sensor technology CNTFET immunosensor
for easy and rapid detection of salmonella is investigated.
Transducer: Carbon Nano Tube (CNT)
Discovered by Ijima group in 1991.
Three types armchair, zigzag and chiral Nanotube
Arc discharge, Laser ablation and CVD are mainly used
to synthesize CNT.
Both metallic and semiconducting CNT is possible
with tunable band gap.
Why CNT as Biosensor
Every atom on the surface
Each atom can interact with environment
Even small change in charge environment can strongly
affect electrical properties
High detection sensitivity through depletion or
accumulation of charge carrier, caused by the binding
of charged biomolecules at surface.
CNTFET
Biosensing Application of CNTFET
As current flows through the tubular structure, change
in the surrounding environment modify the device
characteristics which can easily be quantified.
Diameter comparable to large biological molecules
High surface to weight ratio, accessible to both
electrochemistry and immobilization of biomolecules.
Low charge carrier density of SWCNT is comparable to
surface charge density of proteins.
Biosensing Application of CNTFET
When a molecule is absorbed two phenomena can take
place.
1. Charge transfer:
 Molecules provide or withdraw electron to tube.
 Threshold voltage become more positive (electron
acceptor) or more negative (electron donor.)
Biosensing Application of CNTFET
When a molecule is absorbed two phenomena can take
place.
2. Scattering Process:
 Absorbed molecule acts as a scattering source.
 Overall conductance drops.

Conclusion
Fast and sensitive biosensor.
Can detect upto 100 cfu/mL in one hour which is better
than other techniques time responses.
It could be used a label free platform to detect other
bacteria, viruses and moulds.
Promising technology for future use.
