Seminar and Lab
Seminar : Students will be asked to teach a certain topic from the handout, or an
arbitrary topic related to the course. The seminar will be evaluated mainly for its
usefulness to the audience.

Lab demos and experiments: Lab demos will be conducted alongside the
lectures. There will be weekly lab session on Thursdays 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
In this, students will practice RF design using commercial EM simulators and
will also be exposed to handling of Vector Network Analyzer (VNA). It shall be
the responsibility of the individual student to be regular in maintaining the self
study schedule as given in the course handout, attend lectures and the lab
demonstrations.

Learning outcomes
After successfully completing the course, the students will be able to,

• Understand the importance of electromagnetic modes in RF engineering

• Identify basic RF devices / components and applications
• Design suitable transmission line for a given application
• Design appropriate impedance matching circuit for any given load and line
• Use Smith chart to solve transmission line problems
• Derive /use Scattering parameters of a device
• Describe an RF amplifier using Smith chart plots
• Design waveguides, resonators and couplers for exciting a given mode
• Solve Maxwell's equations using time domain technique
• Use commercial simulation tools to model and optimize RF devices
• Calibrate / handle VNA to perform basic experiments
