Introduction
 Holographic data storage is a potential technology in the area of high-
capacity data storage currently dominated by magnetic data
storage and conventional optical data storage.
 Conventional optical data storage devices rely on individual bits being
stored as distinct magnetic or optical changes on the surface of the
recording medium.

3
Objective
 This technology is used for a large amount of data storage.
 It is a technique that can store information at high denisty inside
crystals or photopolymers.
 Holographic Memory: Holographic memory is a memory that can
store information in the form of hologrpahic image.

Dept of ECE 4
Holographic Versatile Disc
 Holographic Versatile Disc(HVD) uses an optical disc technology
which would hold up to 3.9 terabyte(TB) of information.
 HVD employs a technique called collinear holography.
 1HVD=5800 CDs=830 DVDs=160 blu-ray discs.

Working
• Recording Data
The process of writing the information on to an
Holographic Versatile Disc(HVD) begins with encoding information
into binary data to be stored in the Spatial Light Modulator(SLM).
• Reading Data
The stored data is read through the reproduction of the
same reference beam used to create the hologram. The reference
beam’s light is focused on the photosensitive material and the light
diffracts on the interference pattern, and projects the pattern onto a
detector.

Spatial Light Modulator
 Spatial Light Modulator is a 1024 * 1024 array of light or dark
squares.
 The array represents the data to be stored and is usually
implemented by a set of pixels on an lcd.

Applications
 1.High speed transfer
 2.Large volumes
 3.Data Mining
 4.Petaflop Computing

Dept of ECE 15
Advantages
 It allows 1 Giga byte of data to be written or read in a single flash of
light through SLM unlike other techniques unlike other techniques
which use 1bit/sec.
 Storage density:HVD-390 bit/sq micron ,DVD- 5 bit/sq micron.
 It has very high security.

Dept of ECE 16
Disadvantages
 Manufacturing cost of holographic versatile disk is very high and
there is a lack of availibility of resources which are needed to
produce HVD.
 We are unable to locate the data if there is an error of even a
thousandth of an inch.

Dept of ECE 17
Conclusion

 Capacity turned from 3 giga bytes to 3.9 tera bytes.

 No need to turn over the cd,dvd.
 Three dimensional data storage, store information in a smaller space
and faster data transfer times.
