QUESTION 1

Tay-Sachs is an inherited condition caused by recessive allele

for the gene coding for an enzyme required in the regulation
of the synthesis of glycolipids. Lack of this enzyme results in
the accumulation of glycolipids in the central nervous system
of affected individuals which causes severe neurological
disorder.

i) Suggest why individual that are heterozygous for Tay-

Sachs conditioned are apparently unaffected (2m).
ii) Draw a genetic diagram to show how 2 apparently
normal parents may have an affected child (3m).
QUESTION 2

A pea plant is heterozygous for both seed shape and seed

colour. S is the allele for dominant, spherical shape
characteristic; s is the allele for recessive, dented shape
characteristic. Y is the allele for the dominant, yellow colour
characteristic; y is the allele for recessive , green colour
characteristic. All the F1 generation is spherical and yellow.

i) State the genotype of the parents (2m).

ii) Show the genetic diagram of the F1 generation (4m).
iii) State the percentage of F2 generation which has both
heterozygous genotypes for spherical and yellow seed (4m)
QUESTION 3

In a pea plants, round seeds (S) are dominant to wrinkle

seeds (s). In a genetic cross of a 2 plants that are
heterozygous for the seed shape trait,

i) show the genetic diagram of the progeny (2m)

ii) Give the phenotypic ratio of the round seeds to wrinkle
seeds (1m)
iii) List the genotype of all offspring (4m)
QUESTION 4

Tongue rolling is dominant trait. A woman who can roll her

tongue marries a man who cannot. Their first child has his
father’s phenotype.

i) State the genotype of the mother, father and child (3m)

ii) Give the probability that a second child will not be a
tongue roller (1m)
QUESTION 5

In a population of 1200 pea plants, there a 900 individuals

with purple flower while the rest have white colour.

i) Give the dominant and recessive traits

ii) Give the phenotype of F1 generation
iii) Give the genotype of F1 generation
iv) State the phenotypic ratio of the F1 generation
v) State the genotypic ration of the F1 generation
QUESTION 6

A family has 2 daughters and 2 sons but 1 of the sons is color

blind while the other is normal.

i) State the type of inheritance

ii) State from whom does the son inherited the gene of
color blindness. Show a genetic diagram to prove your
answer.
iii) If a son marries a normal female, give the probability of
their children will inherit color blindness.
QUESTION 7

The ABO blood group is governed by a set of three multiple

alleles, IA, IB and IO. A man of blood group B married a
woman of unknown blood group. They had 3 children. 1 had
blood group A, 1 had AB and 1 had O.

i) Define multiple allele

ii) State the genotype of the parents and give your reasons.
iii) Draw a genetic diagram to show the inheritance of ABO
blood group in the family
QUESTION 8

In a pea plant, yellow seed color controlled by Y allele and

dominant over green seed color which controlled by y allele.
Smooth seed is controlled by R allele while wrinkled allele is
controlled by y allele. In a cross between parents with
genotype Yyrr and yyRR;

i) State phenotype of both parents

ii) State genotype and phenotype of F1
iii) State genotype and phenotype of F2 and their ratios
QUESTION 9

In corn, colored aleurone is due to R allele. Recessive allele, r

is colorless aleurone. The color of the plant controlled by G
and g allele. Green color is dominant over yellow color. In a
test cross between a plant of unknown genotype &
phenotype; and the plant is homozygous recessive, the
offspring are as follow;

Colored aleurone, green = 88

Colored aleurone, yellow=12
Colorless, green = 8
Colorless, yellow = 92

i) State genotype of unknown plant

ii) Are the genes linked? State the location of the genes
iii) Calculate the distance between the genes.
