 Introduction
 Self curing concrete
 Self curing compound
 Mechanism of self curing
 Conclusion
What is Curing?
 It is a process to prevent loss of moisture from
concrete
Why Curing is Required?
o During hydration exothermic reaction occur

2C3S + 6 H2O = C3S2H3 + 3CH +114 KJ/mole

2C2S +4 H2O = C3S2H3 + 2CH +43 KJ/mole

o Environmental factor
Effects of Evaporation
 Hydration
 Micro-cracking
Types of Curing
 Spraying method
 Ponding method
 Steam curing
What is Self Curing Concrete?
 No additional water is added for curing of
concrete

Types of self curing

 Internal curing
 External curing
Why Self Curing Concrete?

• Some times works are carried out

remote place or in desert area

• Highways and airports having

large surface area

Types of Curing Compound

Synthetic resin

Wax

Chlorinated
rubber
Application Procedure

 It is applied by brushing or by spraying while

the concrete is wet.
 In the case of beam and column the application
is done after removal of formwork
 the container of curing compound should be
well stirred before use.
Case Study
 Cement- 400 Kg /m3
 Water cement ratio- 0.4

3 types of curing agent used-

 Polyethylene-glycol (PEG) - (2%)
 Silica fume (SF) - (15%)
 (LECA) - (15%)
Specimans

M1 (Ref)
M2 (15% SF)
M3 (2% PEG)
M4 (15% Leca)
M5 (SF + Ch)
M6 (SF + Leca)

Compressive Strength
Conclusion
 The use of 15% silica fume and self-curing
agents (2% polyethylene-glycol or 15%
saturated leca) separately or in conjunction in
concrete mixes improves all properties of
concrete
