Excel Industries
• Excel industries founded in 2010 by Ron Whitney.

• It’s a classic tech company “Hardware and Software”.

• Has strong engineering function and weak Administration & Operation.

• Idea was- Automatically upload data to web, and use custom analytics to create useful

information for customers

• 1st product Integra- a wrist watch captures information like( miles walked, speed and

health statistics)

Vision :- “To create the most useful information for consumers by using custom hardware to

track their behavioural dimensions and analyze them”

× Gemini was a small company who produced simple bracelets to
track running performance of the user.

× The product was simple and was preforming better in the


market.

× The company was recognized due to its effective marketing and


promotion under the leadership of its CEO Roger Dreanan.

× In February 2014 Excel announced that it had acquired Gemini.

× Dreanan became the CEO and Whitney became the chairman of the
company.

× Whitney said that he was thrilled with the merger but he no longer
had control over the company.

× Many of the employees were laid off.

× Sales and marketing remain separate initially and later it was


combined.

Causes of the Merger

× Whitney’s vision was to built hardware for home environment


which was changed to wearable bracelets.

× Whitney had lost the trust of venture capitalists.

× The sales were low than expected for the new product even
after getting positive review.

# There was no communication and discussion between the
two companies staff.
# Staff were let go and as departments changed, many
employees resigned.
# There was no clear vision and strategy what they are going
to do.
# Eliminating manufacturing and Outsourcing from china.

# Both the company was different, excel was more flexible
and creative where as Gemini was professional and
organised company.
# The major issue was the relationship between Dreanan
and Whitney.

Recommendations
# Dreanan must take decision about
outsourcing rather than his employees taking
decision.

# Whitney should cooperate with Dreanan to


achieve objective of the firm and improve its
condition.
