According to Vinay and Dalbernet:

"The smallest segment of the

utterance whose signs are linked
in such way that they should not
be translated individually".
Also, Bennett proposed the terms:

• Translation atom: the smallest segments of

the utterance that must be translated as a
whole.

• Translation focus: segment of a ST on which

a translator focuses his/her attention at any
one time.

• Translation macro unit: the largest linguistic

unit which the translator needs to consider.

 Classification:
According to the particular role they play in the
message:

 Functional units: eg: he said, él dijo, with her friends, con

sus amigos, a big party, una gran fiesta, ect.
 Semantic units: eg: of course, the main feature, for that
reason, on the other hand, llevar a cabo, dar un paseo,
ponerse de acuerdo, vino tinto, tomar el pelo, meter la
pata, etc.
 Dialectic units: eg: really, since, however, also, well, en
realidad, sin embargo, no obstante, también, además, etc.
 Prosodic units: eg: you don't say!, you're telling me!, ¡Dios
mío!, ¡qué bueno!, etc.
Depending on the relationship between
translation units and words within a text:

• Simple units: eg: He earns five thousand dollars/ él

gana cinco mil dólares; Mary bought four books/ María
compró cuatro libros, etc.
• Diluted units: eg: al igual que/ as, as far as/ hasta,
colon/ etc.
• Fractional units: eg: tomar asiento/ tomar cerveza/
tomar el pelo/ tomar la palabra, por h o por b/ por si
las moscas/ por supuesto/ por la boca muere el pez,
culture gap/ generation gap/ gender gap/ trade gap,
make your day/ make up your mind/ make eyes at/
make do, etc.

 It is a process which includes the use of
software to aid individuals in
translating.

 A linguistic database that captures your

translations (as source and target
sentences called 'translation units') as
you work for future re-use.

stretch of north union street is regularly
rated as one of the best places to go trick
or treating on the east coast and has been
featured on the tlc channel
But this is no Hollywood set, it’s the
home—and vision—of artist Dolores
Dragan, whose fantastical Halloween

Though now retired, Dragan was an art
