    Wu-Xing, or five phases theory, is a fundamental concept in traditional Chinese medicine that describes the relationship between five elements - wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. These elements are associated with organs, qualities, seasons and directions. They have engendering and controlling cycle relationships where one element promotes another and also restricts another. This theory is applied to understand disease causation in terms of elemental excess or deficiency.
