Introduction

Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic disease

characterized and diagnosed by a chronic elevation of blood

glucose that results from defects in insulin secretion, insulin

action or both. This may be accompanied by a variety of

disturbances of carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism.

(Levene, 2003)

The low-glycogenic index (GI) foods may improve the

management of diabetes or lipid profile(Opperman , 2004) .

Epidemiology

Type 2 diabetes is a common public health concern in the

UK.
According to Department of Health(DH)2007, the diabetes
prevalence was about 2.35 million.
2.6 million people have been diagnosed with
diabetes(Diabetes UK,2010)
90% of people with diabetes have type 2 in the UK
(Whitmore, 2010)
The estimated diabetes prevalence for 2030 is more than
366 million worldwide(World Health Organisation, 1999)
More than half million people suffer from diabetes but not
yet diagnosed(Holt et al, 2008)

Data Analysis

 Data is extracted from the quality of life inventory and

the activities conducted in the practice development/
improvement activity
 Presented in the form of pie charts, bar diagrams, table
and line graph
 Low GI Diet of ELLIS application was used to prepare
diabetic meal plan
 Gibbs Modal of Reflection(1988).
Action Plan:
 Along with diabetic meal, if exercise was included it
would have been more effective (Exercise and Type 2
Diabetes, 2005).
 Do more research on GI of ethnic foods to include
comfortably in daily meals
 Consult GP promptly if blood glucose level fluctuates or
is uncontrolled
