In The Name of ALLAH, The Entirely

Merciful, The Especially Merciful

Peace and blessings of ALLAH be
upon our prophet, Mohammad
'O Lord, he said "Ya Rabb! Lakal-
hamdu kama yanbagi li-jalali
Wajhika wa li'azima sultanika (O
Lord, to You is praise as befits
the Glory of Your Face and the
greatness of your Might).'

We have basic rule, that is when food is expressly
mentioned by name in the Holy Koran or
Sunnah, it means that this food carries a valuable
effect on human body and life.
We will see here how barley was one of the most favorable
food for our Messenger Mohammad, Peace and blessings
be upon him.

He ate it in bread (barley bread) and as Talbinah (barley

soup).
Our messenger, Muhammad, peace be upon him,
said that:
‫ تذهب ببعض‬،‫«التلبينة مجمة لفؤاد المريض‬
‫الحزن» صحيح البخاري‬
In the meaning of: The Talbinah soothes the heart of
the patient and relieves him from some of his
sadness.' " [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree]
Ibn Abbas, may ALLAH be pleased upon him, said that:
‫ كان أكثر خبز آل بيت‬:‫«عن ابن عباس أنه قال‬
‫رسول هللا صلى هللا عليه وسلم خبز الشعير» سنن‬
‫الترمذي‬
In the meaning of: The most of the bread that was used
by our messenger’s family was barley bread. (narrated
by al-Tirmidhi)
We should stand a bit and meditate in how our
messenger’s life, peace and blessings of ALLAH be
upon him, was guided by ALLAH, the Almighty.

Of course, ALLAH learnt him the best to learn us the

best too.
To link between Sunnah and our current
life, we will go through scientific research
results with straight view.
Health view
Recent studies, around the world, have proved the
nutritional and medicinal high values of both barley
grains and barley flour, which were also
acknowledged by US Food and drug Administration
and European Food Organization many years ago.
Health view
Scientific studies proved that barley:
 Regulates sugar and fat level in the blood
through its fibers.

 Contains anti-oxidants which reduce the injury

of cancer.
 Significantly decreases depression, stress, and
mood disturbances through its potassium,
magnesium, vitamin B, tryptophan (have a role in
serotonin synthesis)... etc.
 contains Melatonin which has a role in protection
against heart diseases and in regulating sleep.
 Increases the body immunity through activation
of white blood cells by beta-glucan.

 Talbinah may provide a mental health benefit to

elderly people.
Economic view
we have, in Egypt, two main bodies have made
researches on barley in terms of both health effect
and economic impacts when using it in our food,
which are National Research center (in Cairo) and
Mansoura University (Faculty of Agriculture).
Barley is characterized by:
 Ease of its farming.
 Low production costs if compared with wheat
and corn.
 Well cultivated in different types of climate, soil
and agricultural environments.
 Wide area of uses in production of food items and
fodder.
 Possibility of growing it in desert regions and
recently reclaimed soils.
 Irrigation by rain is possible (low water
consumption).
 Less effort and cost in pest resistance.
A loaf of barley and wheat mixture:
1. Nutrionists in National Research center found, in
2008 AD, that we produce 9.6 million Ton of
wheat flour to produce a loaf of bread of 100%
wheat, instead if we design the mixed loaf of
barley and wheat (25:75, respectively) we will
use only 7.2 million Ton of wheat flour (75% of
the first percentage).
2. A leading experiment, in 2016/ 2017 AD, was
done by Mansoura University (faculty of
Agriculture) to replace wheat flour by barley
flour up to 85% and 100%. This was really
implemented by the automatic bakery in faculty
of Agriculture.
