TITLE:

EXOTHERMIC AND
ENDOTHERMIC REACTION
Aim:
To study exothermic and endothermic reaction

Hypothesis:
a) The temperature _________ when
sodium hydroxide reacts with water.
b) The temperature _________ when
ammonium chloride reacts with water.
Variables:
Manipulated variable:
____________________________________
Responding variables :

Apparatus and Materials:
Sodium hydroxide pellets, solid of ammonium
chloride, water, test tubes, thermometer

Procedure:
Diagram
Pls refers to Science Process Skills pg 74
1. The apparatus was set up as shown in the
diagram.
2. A few pellets of sodium hydroxide were put
into the test tube containing 5 cm3 of water.
3. The thermometer reading was recorded after
a few minutes.
4. Steps 2 to 3 were repeated by using solid of
ammonium chloride.
Results:
Type of substance Initial Final

Sodium hydroxide
pellets and water
Solid of ammonium
chloride and water
Discussion:
1. Sodium hydroxide is a substance which
increase the temperature of water.
2. Heat releases when sodium hydroxide reacts
with water.
3. Exothermic reaction occurs.
4. Ammonium chloride is a substance which
decrease the temperature of water.
5. Heat absorbed when ammonium chloride reacts
with water.
6. Endothermic reaction occurs.

Hypothesis is accepted
Conclusion:
a) The temperature _________ when
sodium hydroxide reacts with water.
b) The temperature _________ when
ammonium chloride reacts with water.
