FAST SWITCH TRANSFER FUNCTION

• ACCIDENT SWITCH: implemented automatically in two

situations
i. Bus voltage loss start: when 3 phase(L-L or L-N
selectable) voltages of bus are lower than set point
and last longer than delay time as well as working
breaker is closed and the incomer voltage is lower
than normal voltage. The device start series or
simultaneous switch
ii. The working breaker mis-trip: when some reasons
(including manual mis-operation) cause the working
breaker mis-trip, the device implement series switch
FAST SWITCH TRANSFER FUNCTION
• FAULT SWITCH: Switching started by protection contact or analog value
• Protection contact from: diff protection, generator & T/F protection output etc
• Analog value includes:
i. Frequency difference actuate
ii. Frequency difference no current actuate
iii. Reverse power actuate
iv. Reverse power frequency difference actuate
v. frequency voltage quality actuate
• FAULT SWITCH: service supply trip first then backup supply connected upon
preset condition or adjustable delay
• Fault switch mode: transfer mode can be serial or simultaneous
FAST SWITCH TRANSFER FUNCTION
• MANUAL SWITCH: started by manual operation & complete automatically
• When local/remote manual switch signal received, switching b/w working and
reserve line starts
• Manual switch mode can be:
i. Series switching
ii. Simultaneous switching
iii. Auto-parallel switching
iv. Semi-automatic parallel
v. Parallel failed turned to series
vi. Parallel failed turn to simultaneous
FAST SWITCH TRANSFER FUNCTION
• Fast switch transfer scheme utilizing different switching modes as follow

ii. Simultaneous switching mode
iii. Auto-parallel switching mode
iv. Semi-automatic parallel switching mode
v. Paralleling failed turn to series switch
vi. Paralleling failed turn to simultaneous switch
FAST SWITCH TRANSFER FUNCTION
• Series switching mode: works as follow
i. Trip working breaker first
ii. Confirm working breaker opening (aux contact and current used as signals)
iii. After confirming working breaker opening, close the backup breaker
FAST SWITCH TRANSFER FUNCTION
• SIMULTANEOUS SWITCH MODE: works as follow:
i. Trip working breaker
ii. At process of tripping working breaker, send command of backup
breaker closing
iii. Assure working breaker open first and backup breaker closed
after a settable closing delay time
• working breaker may fail to trip and both working and reserve
supply will become parallel creating a looped network
• If looped network is not allowed in system, a decoupling function
can be set along with a decoupling time
• If a looped network situation happens switch proceeds as follow:
i. Transfer switch waits for the set de-coupling time
ii. After expiry of decoupling time, trip the breaker that just closed
in
FAST SWITCH TRANSFER FUNCTION
• AUTO-PARALLEL SWITCH MODE: works as follow:
i. First close backup breaker based on synchronization
ii. Confirm closing of backup breaker
iii. After confirming of backup breaker closing, trip the working breaker
automatically
• Auto parallel switch mode: supports decoupling function
• Synchronization : can be same frequency or difference frequency synchronization
• Auto parallel switch mode: only supported for manual scheme of fast transfer
switch
FAST SWITCH TRANSFER FUNCTION
• SEMI AUTOMATIC PARALLEL SWITCH MODE:
Works as follow:
i. First close backup breaker based on synchronization
ii. After backup breaker is closed, trip the working breaker manually
iii. Semi automatic parallel switch mode: only works in manual fast transfer
FAST SWITCH TRANSFER FUNCTION
• Parallel failed turn to series mode: works as follow:
i. Switch according to auto parallel mode if conditions of parallel switch mode
satisfied
ii. Else switch according to series switch mode
• this switch mode used only for normal manual switch mode
FAST SWITCH TRANSFER FUNCTION
• Paralleling failed turn to simultaneous mode
i. Switch according to auto parallel mode if conditions of parallel switch mode
satisfied
ii. Else switch according to simultaneous switch mode
• This switch mode only used in normal manual switch mode.
RESERVE SUPPLY AUTO PUT IN
FUNCTION
• “Fast transfer” occurs for three conditions:
i. fault switch (protection relay contact or analog value)
ii. Accident switch (bus voltage loss/breaker mis-trip)
iii. Manual switch
• Above three switching types can be accomplished with the device in “Reserve supply auto
put in function”
RESERVE SUPPLY AUTO PUT IN
FUNCTION
• Reserve supply auto put in function: can be configured in different schemes for
one bus breaker and four incoming breakers.
• Three states of auto put in function:
i. Charging state/Monitoring state: device enters into monitoring state when
incomer & bus voltage and every breaker state is normal.”Auto switch” lamp on
panel blinks for 10 seconds and then becomes steady.
ii. Auto switch Operation state: operation begins if “accident condition” (bus
voltage loss or working breaker mis trip) or “fault signal” (protection start signal
of working breaker) is received. If transfer conditions are satisfied after signal
receipt, then working breaker transfer with backup breaker automatically. After
transfer, device enters “acknowledge reset” state. The device enters
“monitoring state” for next transfer operation only after receipt of local/remote
reset and a delay of 10 seconds.
RESERVE SUPPLY AUTO PUT IN
FUNCTION
• Manual switch operation state:
• When the breaker state is satisfied for manual switch condition, the
“manual switch” lamp normal bright, and the Reserve auto-transfer
device enter the manual switch operation and monitor state. Under
this state, if local or remote manual switch signal is gathered, working
breaker will transfer with backup breaker automatically. If the
operation fails, the device enter waiting affirm reset state. It may not
enter charging state to ready for next transfer until delay 10s and
remote or local reset operation is received. If the operation succeeded,
the device reset automatically after 200ms.

• Protection function
• Post re-close after actuation function
• Reserve supply auto put in fault lock function
• Even record function
• Transferring record wave function

PROTECTION FUNCTIONS
• Dedicated incomer & bus linkage(coupler) over current protection function
• Main functions as follows:
i. Bus linkage O/C protection segment 1
ii. Bus linkage O/C protection segment 2
iii. Bus O/C instantaneous trip protection
iv. #1,#2 &#3 incomer O/C protection
v. #1,#2 &#3 incomer O/C instantaneous trip protection
vi. Incomers and bus voltage loss alarm protection
vii. Incomer PT disconnection alarm
viii. Bus PT disconnection alarm
ix. 2 segments low voltage unloading protection
• Value, delay time & soft switch of each protection can be set independently in
protection set point
PROTECTION FUNCTIONS
• Bus linkage o/c protection segment 1: if this function is active then:
- Trip bus breaker after set time delay if bus linkage(coupler) current is larger
than segment 1 set point current
• Bus linkage o/c protection segment 2:if this function is active then:
- Trip bus breaker after set time delay if bus linkage(coupler) current is larger
than segment 2 set point current
• Bus o/c instantaneous trip protection:
- When bus breaker changes from open to close state, the instantaneous(haste)
protection is open for 5 seconds
- -if during above period, the instantaneous protection is put in and the bus
linkage current is greater than set point current, then bus breaker is tripped
after set time delay
PROTECTION FUNCTIONS
• Incomer O/C protection function: device provides incomer 1, incomer 2
and incomer 3 O/C protection function
• This function operated according to actual running of main bus
connection
• Same logic for o/c protection of the 3 No incomers
• Soft strap is devoted
• Incomer O/C protection works as follows:
- If incomer current >set point, then incomer is tripped
- When device is in “backup transfer monitor state” or “normal transfer
condition detecting” state, if O/C detected in any phase and direction
of current is into the bus(this indicates a zone fault), then fast transfer
function will be blocked during protection tripping. This is to ensure
that reserve transfer does not occur considering the incoming tripping
as “mis-trip”.
PROTECTION FUNCTIONS
• Incomer O/C instantaneous trip function: same
logic for all three incomers
• When incomer state changes from open to close , the instantaneous
protection is opened for 5 seconds ( to avoid inrush?)
• If during above period (the 5 seconds period?), the instantaneous o/c
protection is enabled, then trip each incomer after set delay time
PROTECTION FUNCTIONS
• Incomer & bus voltage loss alarm protection:
- Alarm signal issues after set time delay if voltage of incomer or bus is less that
set point
• Incomer PT disconnection alarm:
- If each incomer PT secondary disconnection” soft switch “ is put in( enabled?)
and incomer voltage less than 70 % of Un, then after 10 seconds delay,PT
disconnection alarm signal sent out by device
• Bus PT disconnection alarm
- If bus PT disconnection alarm is put in. if the incomer breaker is closed and the
incomer voltage is normal or incomer has current, if bus voltage is less than
70% of Un, then bus PT disconnection alarm sent out.
PROTECTION FUNCTIONS
• TWO segments low voltage unloading protection function:
- The low voltage unloading function segment 1 and segment
2 are put in
- When switching is finished, the low voltage unloading
function is opened for 10 seconds
- If during above period , bus voltage is detected lower than
set point value and lasts for the time setting, then some
unimportant loads are tripped off to recover bus voltage
- There is a soft strap switch for low voltage unloading
function
- Can be set independently for segment 1 and segment 2

• Post re-close after actuation function
• Reserve supply auto put in fault lock function
• Even record function
• Transferring record wave function
• Communication, print, GPs time function
Reserve supply auto put lock in fault
• Automatic fault lock function: works based on “power direction lock” and
“voltage unbalance lock”
• Device finds out whether fault is in the protected area through the test of bus
voltage, incomer current etc.
- If fault is within protected area, the device blocks/locks the switching function
to avoid inputting reserve supply on fault point
Reserve supply auto put lock in fault
• Automatic fault lock based on power direction : when detected 3 phase current
of power feed lines is any phase into the bus and if:
- the phase current magnitude > “maximum load current value” and
- At least one L-L voltage of bus < “low voltage latch value” (recommended:60~70%
of Un)( then it means fault is in protected area?).so:
- Device immediately locks all switch start criteria (including protection signal &
analog signal) and starts “fault lock timer”.
- If fault current disappears or “changes direction” before “automatic fault
identification time set point”, the device immediately opens (enables?) all switch
criteria otherwise the device automatically exit the monitor state until the system
is back to normal state.
• Automatic lock based on power direction also applies to condition when bus
voltage drops suddenly due to large motors starting
• Settings of “automatic fault identification time set point” is chosen based on two
criteria:
- no local bus protection installed
- local bus protection installed or no risk of bus fault.
Reserve supply auto put lock in fault
• “automatic fault identification time set point” setting for no local bus protection
-value should be large enough than set time of far backup protection of the supply
feeder to achieve selectivity
- This is to allow far backup protection of the incomer to operate for bus faults if
there is no local bus protection
- Since majority bus faults are permanent faults, so auto transfer device should exit
the monitor state before far backup protection time. this exiting of SID-40B is
necessary to ensure that reserve switching does not occur once fault is cleared by
far backup protection.
Reserve supply auto put lock in fault
• automatic fault identification time set point”
setting for local bus protection installed
- Value of “automatic fault identification time” in such case should be bigger
than the load branch protection relay trip time along with use of bus bar
protection relay signal as blocking signal for automatic switch lock
function
Reserve supply auto put lock in fault
• Automatic fault lock based on voltage unbalance
-bus voltages are balanced for fault points on branch circuits outside
the protection area
• this fault lock works as follows:
-confirm working breaker tripped on fault
-check whether voltage is balanced
- If unbalance rate > 20% Un then lock following three fast transfer
criteria immediately until all three phases are balanced:
i: fast switch ( fault switch, accident switch, manual switch)
ii. Capture motor group withstand voltage criteria
iii. Synchronize/first phase capture criteria
- Residual voltage switch and long delay switch are not locked

SI-40B Control strategy

• Mode 1: the two incomers supply to bus simultaneously, bus coupler is open, bus1 and bus2 reserve for
each other.
• Mode 2: bus coupler is closed or system with only one bus but without bus coupler, one incomer is
supplying and the other is as reserve supply.
• When working incomer fails, fast transfer is the optimal mode in order to make interruption time least. If
the state of system does not allow this switch mode, choose other mode whose speed is slower a little.
SI-40B Control strategy
• SID-40B control strategy for initiating reserve supply transfer is based on four
schemes
i. Fast transfer rule
ii. Capture motor group withstand voltage rule
iii. Capture first point in phase coincidence rule
iv. Residual voltage switch rule
v. Long delayed time switch rule
FAST SWITCH STATEGY
• FAST SWITCH STATEGY: in case of loss of normal supply, “fast switching” will start
up and close output immediately if:
i. Δ⏀ & Δf b/w bus & reserve supply are within setting scope and
ii. Ubus> “fast switch low voltage lock value”
• Bus voltage & freq decay time and decay rate depends on bus load and found
from field tests
• More the load on the bus, slow will be voltage & freq decay rate of bus
• Bus volt & freq decay rate increases as time elapses
• Good choice is to close reserve supply in first 0.3 sec. during this time bus
voltage and decay rate is slower and it is safe for the bus equipments when
Δ⏀ is within 60 degree.
• When Δf =1Hz average, Δ⏀ b/w bus & incoming reserve increases to 36
degree based on inherent switching time of 100msec
• When SID-40B gives out closing signal, Δ⏀ (fast transfer angle setpoint)
should be less than 20 degree.
Capture motor group withstand
voltage rule
• As normal supply fails, the bus residual voltage and frequency starts to decay
depending on connected load
• The angle Δ⏀ b/w bus voltage & reserve supply starts to increase
• Vg : bus residual voltage, VR: reserve supply voltage
• Δ U = UR – UG increases with time
Capture motor group withstand
voltage rule
Capture motor group withstand
voltage rule
• Vector difference Δ U = UR – UG b/w bus residual voltage and reserve supply
increases continually
• Ugo is normal bus voltage with normal supply connected and 𝛅0 is
corresponding angle
• As working supply is removed from Bus , bus voltage changes from Ugo to
Ug1,Ug2… and angle changes from 𝛅0 to 𝛳1, 𝛳12,….
• The corresponding voltage difference Δ U = UR – UG changes from Δ U1
to Δ U12,… etc
• The goal here is to close the reserve supply when Δ U and Δ 𝛳 between bus
residual voltage and reserve supply are within set point windows
• This is to ensure that voltage across the bus loads is lower than the voltage
withstand rating (110~120%) of motors.
• The voltage across the motor loads on closing the reserve supply depends on
the motor group impudence “Xm”.
Capture motor group withstand

voltage rule
When reserve supply is connected only part of the Δ U is dropped across bus
loads as per the bus load impedance “XM”.
• SID-40B closes the reserve supply at point when Δ U is such that voltage across
the loads < withstand voltage of motors
Capture motor group withstand
voltage rule
• Generally normal supply line impedance “XG” and reserve supply line impedance
“XB” are known. So bus motor group impedance XM can be calculated
continuously.
• Initially with working supply connected to bus , Value of XM is calculated as below:

• When normal supply is disconnected, XM calculated at that point is recorded..

From that recorded XM and known XB, the Maximum voltage Δumax is
calculated. When the XM is such that voltage drop across motors will be less
than withstand voltage of motors, then reserve supply breaker is closed.
SI-40B Control strategy
• SID-40B control strategy for initiating reserve supply transfer is based on four
schemes
i. Fast transfer rule
ii. Capture motor group withstand voltage rule
iii. Capture first point in phase coincidence rule
iv. Residual voltage switch rule
v. Long e delayed time switch rule
Capture first point in phase coincidence rule
• Principles:
- When working supply is cut off by fault, the bus residual voltage phasor will rotate
in lag direction relative to reserve voltage vector
- The swtiching of reserve supply is carried out when phase angle difference is zero
b/w residual bus voltage and reserve supply
- The closing time of reserve breaker depends of variation rate of phase angle
difference Ψ
- Uby: reserve supply
- Us : bus voltage
- Ψ : angle difference b/w bus & reserve voltage
- d Ψ/dt: angular rate of change
Capture first point in phase
coincidence rule
• First phase coincidence rule works as follows:
- During vector rotation of residual bus voltage, find the time when angle difference
b/w bus and reserve is zero and then output reserve closing command according
to breaker closing time.
- Bus during this whole process, bus voltage drops to 30~40% and loads fed by
contactors will be cut off while some other motors will self start.
- First phase coincedence will cause supply cutoff to most loads .
- First phse coincedence is a back up for capture withstand voltage scheme.
Capture first point in phase
coincidence rule
• First phase coincedence switching scheme is used in following scenarios:
i. Incapable of completing voltage withstand switching scheme because of very
large initial power angle
ii. When freq of bus residual voltage drops fast but the breaker closing time is too
large , then it is difficult to comple capture voltage withstand scheme
iii. Working supply and reserve supply belong to completely indepdendt system
and there is not only difference of phase angle bus also freq difference
iv. When the scheme requires synchronizing due to presence of high capacity
working supply on the bus and possible mode of transfer is “fast speed auto
parallel transfer”
SI-40B Control strategy
• SID-40B control strategy for initiating reserve supply transfer is based on four
schemes
i. Fast transfer rule
ii. Capture motor group withstand voltage rule
iii. Capture first point in phase coincidence rule
iv. Residual voltage switch rule
v. Long delayed time switch rule
Residual voltage switch rule

• This mode works as follow:

-the three line voltages fall to ≤ residual voltage set point value (20~40% of rated
value)
- The low voltage lasts longer than set point time
• Residual voltage switch scheme is a backup of 1st phase coincedence switching
scheme
• When working supply is cut by protection and neither fast transfer , capture
withstand voltage and 1st pahse coincedence can be carried out by device,
then close reserve supply according to residual voltage switch scheme
• Residual voltage switching scheme does not look for angle difference and freq
difference.
• Since swiching is carried out at fairly low residual voltage so most loads will be
cut off by low voltage protection causing supply interruption
SI-40B Control strategy
• SID-40B control strategy for initiating reserve supply transfer is based on four
schemes
i. Fast transfer rule
ii. Capture motor group withstand voltage rule
iii. Capture first point in phase coincidence rule
iv. Residual voltage switch rule
v. Long delayed time switch rule
Long delayed time switch rule

• If in the “assigned time” ,switching cannot be carried out by device by any of

preceding four mentioned schemes, the reserve supply switching carried out
by long delayed time switch rule
• This switching scheme used only as standby mode and will not work under
normal situations
• General this mode adopted when fault happens many times in short time
