Sports therapists are trained and accredited professionals who work to prevent, treat, and rehabilitate sports injuries. They provide services like injury assessment, soft tissue therapy, exercise prescription, and emergency response. Sports therapists receive extensive education in areas like biomechanics, manual therapy, rehabilitation, and sports medicine but are not physicians. They work under the supervision of physiotherapists to supplement injury care for athletes while bridging communication between medical professionals and coaches. The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong offers a bachelor's program in sports therapy that is accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists and prepares students for careers in sports injury management worldwide.

Prevention of sports injuries and illnesses by implementing biomechanical and physiological analysis to devise strength and conditioning, corrective exercise, and fitness programmes which may also advise patients on nutrition and recovery.
Recognition and Evaluation of existing sports-related
musculoskeletal injuries and illnesses sustained by recreational and competitive athletes require a comprehensive clinical assessment to provide accurate identification of the dysfunction.
Management, Treatment and Referral of acute on-field
injuries often require a rapid response, immediate treatment and shock management to stabilise the condition, followed by the safe extrication from the field of play and referral to specialist staff.
Rehabilitation of patients by prescribing a safe and effective
rehabilitation programme devised from evidence-based medical research. Planned targets focusing on joint mobility, muscle strength, balance and coordination enhance the recovery process from the acute stage to a fully functional return to play.
Education and Professional Practice Issues delivered at
regular CPD events will assist patients, athletes, coaches and support staff to gain awareness of effective athlete preparation and recovery strategies which sustains optimal performance.

Sports Therapists are not Physiotherapists or Doctors
We do not provide a diagnosis of injury or illness to patients or injured athletes. We apply physical methods including heat and cryotherapy; soft tissue therapy; therapeutic exercises; taping and strapping; and joint mobilisation to treat and manage sports-related injuries & conditions, but we don't prescribe drugs or surgical intervention. We do not apply electrotherapy to patients except under the direct supervision of qualified staff e.g. registered physiotherapists. We do not treat medical conditions which physiotherapists specialise in e.g. pediatric, pulmonary, respiratory, and neurological conditions and cases. We don’t compete with physiotherapists, instead we supplement physiotherapy services in a sports context and bridge the gap between medical professionals and sports coaches.
Sports Therapists are not just Sports Masseurs or First Aiders
Sports Therapists possess advanced soft-tissue therapy skills applying them as an integral part of their scope of practice to minimise injury and promote recovery and regeneration. Sports Therapists are first responders who apply knowledge, skills and training to provide immediate care and management of sports-related injuries and illnesses at sports events.
