 The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) method is a way to test a change that is implemented.
Going through the prescribed four steps guides the thinking process into breaking down
the task into steps and then evaluating the outcome, improving on it, and testing again.
 This change management model benefits companies by providing a systematic
approach to achieving continuous improvement. The objective is to continually
progress through each stage while aiming to achieve a better quality output of products
or services or information as defined by our customers.
 The concept of the PDCA Cycle was originally developed by Walter Shewhart, the
pioneering statistician who developed statistical process control in the Bell Laboratories
in the US during the 1930's. It is often referred to as `the Shewhart Cycle’.
 It was taken up and promoted very effectively from the 1950s on by the famous
Quality Management authority, W. Edwards Deming, and is consequently known by
many as `the Deming Wheel'.

 Plan
 I plan to: Here you will write a concise statement of what you plan to do in this testing. This will
be much more focused and smaller than the implementation of the tool. It will be a small
portion of the implementation of the tool.
 I hope this produces: Here you can put a measurement or an outcome that you hope to achieve.
You may have quantitative data like a certain number of doctors performed teach-back, or
qualitative data.
 Steps to execute:
 Here is where you will write the steps that you are going to take in this cycle. You will want
to include the following:
 The team selects the problem to be solved (or the process to be improved).
 The problem and objectives are clearly identified.
 The current situation is analyzed.
PD
 Solution alternatives are identified, selected and scheduled.
AS
 Do
 After you have your plan, you will execute it or set it in motion.
 What did you observe? Here you will write down observations you have during your
implementation. This may include how the patients react, how the doctors react, how the nurses
react, how it fit in with your system or flow of the patient visit.
 The solution is tested on a small scale basis.
 It involves collecting data for later analysis.
 It ensures the solution is appropriately tested and benefits are validated before committing to
full implementation.

PD

Study
 After implementation you will study the results.
What did you learn? Did you meet your measurement goal? Here you will record how well it
worked, if you meet your goal.
 Involves analyzing the collected data and comparing the actual results against the planned
objectives.
 Allows evaluating how well the solution worked.

PD

 Act
 What did you conclude from this cycle? Here you will write, whether it worked or not. And if it
did not work, what you can do differently in your next cycle to address that. If it did work, are
you ready to spread it across your entire practice?
 Involves acting on the feedback and lessons learned and implementing the solution fully.
 It is also concerned with:
 Standardizing.
 Documenting.
PD
 Sustaining the improved process. AS
7 STEPS OF PDSA CYCLE
IDENTIFY THE OPPORTUNITY

• OBECTIVE - IDENTIFY AND PRIORITIZE OPPORTUNITIES FOR

IMPROVEMENT

• IT CONSISTS OF 3 PARTS
1. IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM
2. FORMING OF TEAMS
3. DEFINE THE SCOPE
ANALYSE THE CURRENT PROCESS

• OBJECTIVE – UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS AND HOW IT IS BEING

PERFORMED

• MAIN ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

1.Define process boundaries, outputs and customers, inputs and
suppliers and process flow
2. determine levels of customer satisfaction and measurements needed
3. gather data
4. identify root causes
DEVELOP THE OPTIMAL SOLUTION

• OBJECTIVE- ESTABLISHING POTENTIAL AND FEASIBLE

SOLUTIONS AND RECOMMENDING THE BEST SOLUTION TO
IMPROVE THE PROCESS
IMPLEMENT CHANGES

• OBJECTIVE- PREPARING THE IMPLEMENTATION PLAN OBTAINING

APPROVAL AND IMPLEMENTING THE PROCESS IMPROVEMENTS
STUDY THE RESULTS

• OBJECTIVE- MONITORING AND EVALUATING THE CHANGE BY

TRACKING AND STUDYING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE
IMPROVEMENT EFFORTS THROUGH DATA COLLECTION AND
REVIEW PROGRESS
STANDARDIZE THE SOLUTIONS

• OBJECTIVE- INSTITUTIONALIZE THE CHANGES BY POSITIVE

CONTROL(POSITROL)
PLAN THE FUTURE

• OBJECTIVE – ACHIEVE IMPROVED LEVELS OF PROCESS

PERFORMANCE
